Private contact with other forum users

Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:19 pm

I am new to the forum and wanted to make contact with other users via email that are working on similar issues.

I checked several profiles and the "Contact <nickname>" field is shown under their profile but there is no link or button.

While I understand there is a permission for contact under each person's profile, I am wondering if it is a browser issue as I can contact no one by looking under profiles.

Thanks in advance.

I say this every time this comes up, and this time is no exception.
I believe the removal of private messages has made communication between forum members less safe overall.

I await the day those in power come to their senses and repeal this silly law.

Imperf3kt,

How so?

Can you explain how you come to that not entirely intuitive conclusion?

Of course, safe or not is not the point. If whatever bad things happen between people communicating through the internet happen, then at least it cannot have happened with the aid of this forum and they are clear of any responsibility or blame.

A rather simple example, how do you organise a sale of an item using the for sale section of the forum?
I'm certainly not willing to post my email, or other private means of contact in a public place where every spambot under the sun can access it.
I could use a secondary email, but how can I be sure the person who contacts me via that is who I think I am talking to?

I have other examples, but I'd rather not take this thread off topic more than I already have.
I don't protest in order to change the situation, only to complain really.
If only I had a way to talk to you directly...

Edit:
After re reading the thread discussing removing PM's, I regret posting this now.
I still hold this opinion, but I think I'll just leave it be from now on.

We had very important reasons why PM's were disabled.

You don't know those reasons, and I won't be saying what they were. But they are there, and they haven't gone away.

I believe this is why we butt heads so often; lack of understanding.
You know why you made your decisions, and can thus understand why they were made.
I don't have that information, so it's understandable that I may not see why the decision was made.

I have since read through the linked discussion and come to regret my behaviour.
I apologise and will drop the matter.
