Presumably a usb-connected mass storage device?

What model of Raspberry Pi board is involved?

What Operating System is it running?

How was the usb device 'formatted'? What type of filesystem does it now contain?

Do you have a reliable, preferably 'official', power supply for your RPi4b?

Since you have mentioned two "Microsoft" filesystems, perhaps you intend to use this thumb drive to transfer data to some sort of Windows system?

Have you tried formatting the storage device on the Windows system it will be used with?

Maybe the thumb drive device is faulty? Have you checked it with any other systems to confirm it works?

I remember you asking a question before regarding backfeeding protection on the Pi's USB ports (yes?), did you connect something that could have backfed the Pi?

On the Raspberry Pi running Raspbian Buster use the following information gathering commands before plugging in the external mass storage.

Code: Select all

lsusb
df -h
dmesg

Then plug in the drive and repeat the same commands. What difference, if any, do you see in the output?

In the spirit of these forums being a community where users help other users, could you say briefly what you found, in case it is of value to some future reader?
