Novation Launchpad X

Wed Jan 15, 2020 8:59 pm

Totally new to this. I’ve got a Novation Launchpad X and I’d like to get it to work on my Pi4. I guess my hope that midi devices were a bit like mice, standardized enough to use a common driver, was naive. From my reading so far, the lowest level check I can do is to use dmesg. Nothing new shows up when I plug or unplug the device, unlike my two other midi controllers which produce messages indicating the name of the device.

I’m assuming the device simply needs a software driver (which I don’t have the skill to write), but I thought, somewhere, I would find a message indicating an unrecognized device is connected. I’m wondering if the incompatibility is more than lack of a driver.

Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: found Novation support article that recommended flipping the USB-C connector and that seems to have gotten it to be recognized as a midi device!

Edit2: it works with Buster out of the box! Sample code and Novation docs let me animate the blinkenlights!
