Integrated Car-puter

Wed Jan 15, 2020 12:05 pm

Hi,

First post, so be gentle please.

I have a project in mind and although I've seen code for each disparate part, I'm yet to see exactly what I want. First off my hardware

-Pi V4
-4.5 Touch screen
-Megasquirt V2 (serial output)

I want to make a fully functioning car computer with the following functions
- GPS
- Blue tooth media control from an apple device/phone
-Engine information
- Ability to make voice calls to paired devices
- Ideally the ability to access MS tuner studio (installed on the Pi) and tune on the fly (I will need a bluetooth key board for this, but this functionality is a nice to have)

It will be going into an '83 volkswagen so there are no options for an OEM install. As before, I have seen each piece of functionality available or several parts, but no integrated system that boots and looks like a modern carputer. I understand that many modern systems actually use a similar code to Linux. The install must
- Boot quickly - I have a second project to build a mechanism that raises the screen from within the dash, so around 10-20 seconds would be ideal
- Have no desk-top but instead look like an integrated system with onscreen buttons (so not like using a mouse and cursor)
- Buttons and layout to look similar across the functionality

Oh, and I'm a total beginner to all this. I'm really hoping there is already an image available to fulfil these requests but I am more than open to attempting it myself so pointing in the direction of some useful sources in that case would suffice.

Thanks in avance

Wow - that's a lot of requirements.
Have you checked CarBerry?

If you google raspberry pi car computer you get quite a few hits to look at.

Take a look into open auto pro, using this with the pi you can customise alot. However I doubt a vw that old has obd/can bus so you may struggle showing engine info,

This is what I have so far, maybe a bit more involved than what you're after, but should give you an idea

Hi Rhys,

Thanks for your reply and video.
That's the look I want, especially they initial splash screen (obviously VW) - how did you achieve this?
Regarding you're other functionality, that's exactly what I want, but I don't want it running through an android app. 1 - because I have apple and 2 - I don't want to tie it to a single OS as I may change at some point and want to keep this as flexible as possible.
There is no Can Bus you're correct, but I have MS 2 which can feed all this info via serial port connection (and even through a USB adaptor) to a computer. However, I'm happy for this to be a later addition. I'm much more interested in the media/sat nav/reverse camera functionality currently.

Do you know of anything available that can handle this?

Thanks for your reply.

I have looked at carberry and there was something that didn't meet my requirements, but I forget what it was. I'll check it out again however. Cheers

I've just had a look at the open auto pro, which looks very promising. Just wondering, can I upload an external GPS program to it? Looks like you can add many different external apps.

Second, can you customise the external apps to look similar across the platform so it looks more uniform?

Finally, do you know if you can change the layout of the buttons and the wallpaper? I like the carberry look but I don't think it will serve all my requirements
