How would you use a Raspberry Pi device?

After almost 1 year I got my Raspi. It took so long, and import taxes here in Brazil are a freakin-shit! I paid in total with taxes almost $167,00 !!!

Anyway, moving on...

My first though was use Raspi as a firewall (OpenBSD + PF) since that is not yet possible, I'll use it as a Media Center / Simple Local Fileserver (Samba) / Simple Webserver / Python Learning and Kids Learning (I have a 8yr old girl and 5month baby boy) / Gaming with Emulators. In thinking in many others thing for GPIO also!

I have an ARM7 unit which I developed (5 years ago) a barcode access system to and open a turnstile if ticket valid (uses Ip to talk to TCP server)

I need to replace this Arm7 and the Pi looks the business. I need IP, two serial/USB ports and GPIO to enable LED's and a relay. installed and set up using qtonpi and easy to get simple tcp client running.
should be able to port the application fairly easily (I hope )

I could see this being part of a beer brewing system... something that can monitor a temperature sensor, and turn on/off heating or cooling devices to keep fermentation temperatures exactly as i want them

NOTE: he's using a Freescale board, but should be no problem getting a Pi or 2 to do the job.

I was thinking about one of the two (my problem is with eliminating cables around the house):
-streaming sound to the speakers in the other room
or
-build a wireless USB over IP server (based on this piece of software http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ and adding a wifi dongle + a wired USB hub).. however i'm not sure if the little PI is up to the task...

I like this idea of a media/audio extender VERY well. Kitchen, 4" touch screen, and winamp = EASY. Add some JBL Creature Speakers to sit on top of the cupboards, and you have an instant hit for kitchen music.

I plan on making a console type case for it, attaching add on boards like gps and wifi to it, hooking up a small touch screen, and placing it on the center of the gas tank on my motorcycle. I would like to put a mic on it and connect it to the speakers on my bike, and attempt to find a voice recognition program that will install. It would be really great the day someone figures out how to successfully run Android stable, thats what I'm waiting for because I suck at command lines.

I want something to replace my Boxee Box, that doesn't cost so much.
It would be able to;
1. connect to my FreeBSD NAS servers that hold all of my media
2. be able to play all the different file types on my media servers
3. run Navi-X
4. be able to run a wireless keyboard/mouse/touchpad to be able to control the GUI without wires
5. be able to mount on the back of my TV
6. act as a web browser to access Youtube and other video streaming sites

Once I could get something like that working, I would buy a bunch more for friends & family.

I'm currently using my model B to program AVR microcontrollers.
I installed moebius as the OS, write code using nano, compile using gcc-avr and txr using avrdude and a avrispmkII.
n i usually i'm remote ssh-ing everything. so i get to code new stuff using my smartphone while watching the telly.

I use mine for running a Web Adjuster server http://people.ds.cam.ac.uk/ssb22/adjuster/ and it's good to be able to do so on such a low-powered device that's also silent so doesn't keep me awake at night in a studio flat. If I ever have to move to a place without broadband, I could ask a friend to take over housing the server.

So I got recommended to use the Raspberry Pi for a project I have, and now here I am.
I should be getting my kit any day now and have been reading a bit about it.
What I want the Rpi to do is control a stepper motor (on for x amount of steps then off) at the same time that it turns on a series of short videos on a screen, and at the end turn the stepper again).
Now, I'm not sure where I should ask this, so I came to this particular topic, but can anyone give me some direction?

My pet project for my first Raspberry is a low power consumption laptop like device. The goal is to have a low power laptop with a high power battery pack to have it run an entire night in a bar with free wifi. So far I picked the needed keyboard with track pad combo device to have it work in tests.

With a project like this as you add a part you test it as only perfection is passable like NASA.

We have got the Raspberry Pi 'B' Board, did made several SD cards with Linux releases - Raspbian, Pidora, Archlinux.

I am pleasantly surprised that this little board works very well, considering the low memory and cpu frequency.

We have a line of products allowing use of peripheral cards through USB - last week did a software release which supports Raspberry Pi platform. The line includes usb2isa and usb2pcmcia products, allowing the use of ISA and PCMCIA cards on Raspberry Pi.

hi duncanbbd (brian) can do for me the turnstile scanning again, rasperry pi connect to virtual server, than the server download via api barcodes the virtual server check with rasperrby pi, we did it before need somebody to do the server application for me with api connection.
