FF install not working on Debian Buster

Thu Aug 08, 2019 8:21 pm

I've extracted FF 66.0.3 tar.bz2 to a folder in my home directory but when I click on the FF executable, it fails to run. Can't figure out the problem. Maybe run dmesg?

Raspbian Buster ARMHF by default offers firefox-esr

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install firefox-esr

Is what you downloaded compatible with ARMHF Linux ?

Maybe it is not a default standard Raspbian Buster install ?

I was about to update the earlier topic but apparently the thread has been locked.

Here is the procedure to install Firefox (not ESR) on Buster:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -y dirmngr
echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu cosmic main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/firefox.list
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y firefox
This time I intentionally omitted the deb-src line. Not sure why the old instructions kept doing that considering nobody in the target audience was building from source.

Thanks to QwertyChouskie for informing on the Ubuntu <-> Debian libc version mapping.

Can't get past sudo apt install dirmngr. Here is the output from that command.

Errr:1 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian stretch/main armhf dirmngr 2.1.18-8~deb9u4
Something wicked happened resolving 'raspbian.raspberrypi.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)
E: Failed to fetch http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbia ... _armhf.deb
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try --fix-missing?

I cannot successfully update the system and running --fix-missing returns errors.

Looks like you're on Raspbian Stretch? There are no official working builds of Firefox 55~68 for Stretch. You can see the older thread I linked for custom builds and workarounds.

You'll be best off upgrading to Buster. Your network connectivity / DNS error is unrelated, but that might go away on a fresh image of Buster too.

Upgrade to buster.
I'm using 68.0.2 (32-bit) from snapshot.debian and it's fine; nice and fast.
