Ah, okay. I was thinking it might need to be somewhat accessible which was why the icon was located on the desktop, but maybe that was just a side effect of making mounted partitions visible on the desktop. If nothing in there ever needs to be accessed by the user then your initial post worked great:

That definitely got the icon off the desktop on my NOOBS/Raspbian system.

I think you can disable showing it on the desktop from the main menu: Preferences->Appearance Settings->Desktop and untick External Disks. This will prevent any USB storage devices showing up as well.
