Tinkercad with Chromium

Mon Feb 04, 2019 12:38 pm

Hi,

How to use TinkerCad on the Raspberry Pi with Chromium? Our students would like use Tinkercad with Chromium so we watched some videos on youtube but our test didn't work well. Do you have any suggestions about that?

Best wishes.

If you are running RPi 3B or 3B+ with Raspbian it is likely chromium-browser is running out of resources, that is the downside of WebGL Web Apps they assume one has a high end Computer !

You could try install Openscad software it is in the Raspbian repositories...

OpenSCAD hasn't been in the repos for some time now. There's a problem with a QT library that it depends upon that won't easily build on Raspberry Pi. The support packages openscad-mcad and openscad-testing-data that are available don't provide the binary.

3D CAD tends to be very resource-intensive. I haven't yet found a package light enough to run enjoyably on a Raspberry Pi.

Just tested TinkerCAD while monitoring resources with htop, saw all 4 cores maxing out every time and memory usage at about 65%, swap usage was 150MB (mine was set at 1000MB) .

with every mouse click, all 4 cores maxes out...slow response... not very enjoyable experience as of now.

As others have said the pi 3 can’t really handle Tinkercad with Chromium. Does anyone know how the pi 4 fairs with Tinkercad?

Many thanks

Quite nicely - I was surprised! I went to https://www.tinkercad.com/ on a 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 over VNC, and it was pretty decent.

If you're feeling adventurous, I've heard that http://openscad.net/ works, as does the armhf AppImage of OpenSCAD on https://files.openscad.org/snapshots/

This post claims to have a full preview and slicer workflow too: CAMotics
