What VNC you are using?

Lack of full information of the system where the fault originated deters us from giving meaningful response....

Running latest Buster
From the VNC (tightvnc) window the pull down menu

Preferences>Raspberry Pi Configuration

Does nothing.

That menu item calls rc_gui

Which responds with

"Client is not authorized to connect to server"

Before Buster this worked. Now on the latest Buster it quits with no message.

Found the answer. When a menu item launches a application, it has to keep the original environment and use SUDO_ASKPASS environment to see if this user is authorized as a super user.

The menu command default is

env SUDO_ASKPASS=/usr/bin/rc-gui/pwdrcg.sh sudo -A rc_gui

(note the different rc-gui and rc_gui). Unfortunately, that forgets the environment and doesn't know who is calling the program. Thus rc_gui cannot authorize the user to change the menu and it just crashes.

Go to the Preferences>Main Menu Editor

and change the command for Raspberry Pi Configuration properties to make it

env SUDO_ASKPASS=/usr/bin/rc-gui/pwdrcg.sh sudo -AE rc_gui

Adding the E keeps the environment (and remembers you are the authorized "pi") user.

Hopefully, this bug will be fixed with later editions of Buster

From the VNC (tightvnc) window the pull down menu
Using the built in RealVNC server on my Pi4 and using RealVNC viewer from a Win 10 machine - it works fine for me

This appears, as in other posts, one either uses the supported on the Raspberry Pi SBC RealVNC, or uses a 'one size fits all' software which may or may not function as expected.

I vote for RealVNC every time......
Retired disgracefully.....
