What is the coolest game for Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspbian?

Fri Jan 05, 2018 12:02 am

I just want to know, what are some of the best games that work on Raspbian? I am mostly looking for Racing and Sci-Fi action games. :D

I all depends on what you consider 'Cool'! Check out the sticky's at the top of the Gaming Section or use the links -

Here is a list of games you can install using the "apt-get" command, these games are downloaded from the Debian repository:

https://packages.debian.org/stable/games/

Here is a website that lists the best open source games for Linux:

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/open-source-video-games/

Using the "apt-get" command, all of your downloaded games will appear under "games" in the applications menu. Any game running on the RPI is interesting, the secret to games on Linux is understanding how to run PC games on the RPI without using any PC emulator.

An even better trick is to write your own games, works well for me.

This will mean that Imperf3kt will have more video games than anyone else, compiling games to run on the RPI can be very difficult, not recommended for everyone, most people should use the Debian repository. As stated before, the coolest game running on Raspbian is the PC game that can run on the RPI without using any PC emulator, which will be open source, this means the PC game is utilizing the ARM CPU based program instead of some x86 WINE based program or some other virtual machine program such as DOSBox.

There is nothing wrong with DOSBox overall, I use DOSBox, use DOSBox from the Debian repository and see for yourself, the program can't even run DOOM 1993.

Supertuxkart can run if you know how to get it running, which I don't :(
Time to check for updates, yippee new 1.0 :D
http://blog.supertuxkart.net/

Some of the cooler games require OpenGL which is still a work in progress.
Raspbian is a bit behind with OpenGL at version 13 and latest Mesa3d is 19 which has newer Pi code in it.

"Coolest" is personal taste.
I spend way too much time playing Warzone2100, which nearly works ok last time I tried installing it.
I have not tried it on the new 3B+.

By mid year when Kernel 4.19 is in Raspbian we will probably get Mesa19+.
It should by then make it easier to port games that have high OpenGL requirements like 0AD.

Warzone2100 and 0AD are the two games I use to test Pi OpenGL.
Years ago WZ did not work, now it does, sort of, 0AD now at least boots.
STK is the 3rd game I use for testing, might try again now that the new version is out.

If STK runs then there is a good chance Stunt Rally can work.
Networked racing games, that is cool :D

Imagine Pi based DIY home racing arcades systems.
Schools teach wood work any more?
I'm dancing on Rainbows.

That was the plan about three years ago.

To date, mostly thanks to hardware related issues I had to learn to resolve, I have only a single (unfinished) game running on the Pi currently, and it's not even all that great - a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with varying difficulty settings.

In retrospect, I should not have made that comment. It stemmed from my personal opinion that the Pi is not a retro games emulator and instead a tool for learning programming and other things about computing.

I must apologise because it was rather sarcastic.

You can play doom really well with gzdoom. It's just doom, nothing changed.

you have to go to the zdoom website, click on archive for gzdoom, download gzdoom_3.4.1_armhf.deb, install it by double clicking it.
Open up the terminal and type:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod a+w /home/pi/.config/gzdoom
Press enter, nothing should happen.
Go into the file manager and type into the search bar ~/.config/gzdoom
Place the doom1 or doom2 .wad files next to the .ini file,
(you could get the files from dos games archive)
and open up the gzdoom application in your application menu.

If this works, you're welcome in advance. :D
