SD CARD COPIER "COULD NOT MOUNT PARTITION"

Fri Jul 07, 2017 12:38 pm

Hello,

I've an install DEBIAN on my RASP PI3 on a 64gb SD CARD.
I try to use the soft in the accessories "SD CARD COPIER" to duplicate my config on another SD CARD of 64gb.
The new SD CARD is formated in FAT32, and plugged in an USB SD reader.
I launch the appli, it works fine untill the end, but it finally display a message "could not mount partition".

When I try to boot on the copy, it crashes at the start up with this message->
---[ end kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2)

Anyone could help or should have the same problem ?
Regards

The target SDCard is worn out, fake or has reached end-of-life.

Hello,

I don't think so.
It's a new one, and has been tested just before with a fresh installe of debian.img, which booted without problem....
How could I check such eventual problem?

Did you ever find a solution? I seem to have exactly the same issue with a perfectly good target card. I also can't use Win32DiskImager as the sizes are a few bytes out. It can't be this difficult just to copy a card?

No found solution... same problem of sizing with win32imager....
I have the same feeling about the "no easy way" to backup a raspberry config.

Bummer.

Looks like someone could make a killing making 3.5, 7.5, 15.5, 31.5etc Gb SD cards to use as masters!

I run Raspbian Jessie with Desktop and use the in-built Pi-Clone SD Card Copier and never have an issue copying to genuine SD Cards in a USB SDHC SD Card Reader.

Just tried the same target card with a smaller source and it works fine. I think the issue is my original source as just a few bytes larger than my target even though they're both listed as 16Gb. My try to dust off an old Linux laptop as see if I can reduce the size of the original at all.

It's not a good news, because the advantage of the SD CARD COPIER is exactly that it shoud be able to ignore unsused bytes to backup to a smaller SD CARD destination....! Finally, it seems it's not a better solution than WIN32diskimager...

Hi,
I have been doing a large project that requires alot of SD cards the same,
I whent through all these problems when trying to replicate a single system using various methods.
in the end i had to partition a master SD card to 7.5gb did the full install on this SD then used this to create loads of clones on 8gb SD cards
This works for all my setups and every copy works first time (format as per guidlines first)

Besides this i seem to also have come across a batch of SD cards 'Sandisk' that i had loads of problems with becoming corrupt when running or at reboot, COULD NOT MOUNT PARTITION and loads of other problems, i think they were fakes as i know that Sandisk are a reputable manufacturer.

The SD Card Copier works. If have used it loads of times to copy from larger to smaller SD cards, smaller to larger SD cards, SD cards to SSD, SSD to SD cards, etc. If you are having problems, then something is wrong with your SD card or the card reader.

I had one card reader that seemed to function perfectly when used for reading and writing files, but frequently resulted in errors when used with the SD card copier or Etcher. Ended up tossing that one and using another. No troubles now.

Note that when copying a larger card to a smaller card, the used space on the larger card cannot exceed the capacity of the smaller card (should be obvious, but...).

And yes, there are loads of fake SD cards, especially SanDisk and Samsung brands. Ebay is rife with this nonsense, but even reputable retailers can get bitten, so it's best to test your cards to be sure.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Hi All,
Trying to Clone a Jessie SD card which is fully encrypted using LUKS.
I am getting the error message "Could Not Mount Partition"
I tried using a new 16GB Noobs SD card and also tried cloning to a USB 32GB thumb drive.

Any ideas?
Thanks, John

It's just about 100% guaranteed that the PiClone tool won't know how to handle any encryption.

Use dd to copy it.

Thanks Mr. Lawson,
Is it possible to clone an encrypted SD card using dd right on the pi using an SD to USB adaptor and then verify that the two SD cards are identical?
I need to do all this right on the pi so as to maintain an air gap around it.
In fact the encryption process took place on the pi using only a USB thumb drive to hold data during encryption.
So no other device has ever seen the contents of the SD card.
The following are the opensource notes I made to get this done.

https://github.com/johnshearing/MyEther ... encryption

I guess I could use these notes to copy an encrypted partition and restore it later but I do not know how to make an exact clone of the entire SD card and then verify that they are the same.
Thanks for your ideas,
John

Hi Friends,
Turns out it is very easy to clone an SD card using only:
The raspberry pi,
two SD card to USB adaptors - about $15 each at Staples,
and a USB hub which I also purchased at Staples for $15.
And it doesn't matter if the card is fully encrypted or not.
The following are my open source notes showing how to do it.

How I fixed it.

I had been running off of the USB flash drive for months when I did an update and ran into this problem:
https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... et-upgrade
So I backed up my data from the USB drive, and was going to recopy from the SD card using SD Card Copier, when I got the "Could not mount partition" error. I tried everything. This is how I finally got it to work.

I needed to fully reformat the USB drive. I went into Disk Management in Windows, and removed both partitions from the USB drive. I then did a full slow reformat of the entire USB drive in exFAT as a single partition. A Quick Format did not work.
I stuck the USB drive into the Pi. It did not mount, but SD Card Copier worked like a champ.

I have the same problem.
I reworked the physical format, but no matter how many times I do it, the word "COULD NOT MOUNT PARTITION" appears and the work stops. Is this device (USB memory) no longer available?

I tried it with another USB memory (new). However, the same error occurred and I could not copy. If so, is it a problem with the main unit? ?
Please tell me how to solve it.

seems that sometimes SD Card Copier cannot perform its function on 128GB and up capacities...
and get the "could not mount partition" error during phase 2 of the copying process....

so I just go back down to 64GB and lower.... as the actual used space in my raspbian installation is just 18GB.....

In my case. I used 64GB and 128GB USB memory, but both were bad.
