:D

The forthcoming Raspberry Pi Model C will now be called the Pi Model CBE. It comes with a pink unicorn, a pony and a stable to keep them in.

That means Liz will need a new hat for her visit to Buck House with Eben to collect his gong.

I don't agree with the honours system by any stretch of the imagination because too many are given to folks like Sir Philip Green (who should have his K torn off for asset stripping BHS) and too few are given to folks who merit gongs like Eben.

Mostly I'm excited about meeting Brian Blessed, who was made an OBE today! (I don't think this means Eben gets to order him around, but we can dream.)

Will Mr Upton be dropping subtle hints to Mr Blessed regarding the fate of a certain Mr Gordon?

Some kind of honour is a good idea. Like the Nobel prize and many others it brings people and important things to the notice of general public. Like the Nobel prize and such we can always dispute if the honour went to right people or not.

In Finland every year there is a presidents party, a huge formal gathering. Every year honoured people, deemed to have done great things for the country, are invited. A long line of them shakes the hand of the president one by one as they enter. It's all shown live on TV.

I was amazed to see the young Linus Torvalds was in that line many years ago.

Onward my brave Pi Men. Let this be known forever as Eben Upton's Day.

Gordon's alive? I thought he'd been crushed when the device tree fell on him.

Wow. Congrats Eben. Bet you never thought this would happen when you were stumping up the cash for that very first batch of Pi B boards.

Strange that an OBE sounds 'better' than a CBE

Makes sense if you find out that...
CBE == Commander of the Order of the British Empire
OBE == Officer of the Order of teh British Empire.

So... Cdr. Dr. Upton....

Side note...Tim Peake also got an honor. One usually given for service to UK outside the country, which certainly fits his situation.

Good to see recognition for the reboot of UK (and wider) computing in home, school and business.
Well done Eben and team.

I can just imagine it now - at the presentation ceremony. A flunkie sidles up to Eben and says, "Dr Upton, your t-shirt doesn't meet our dress code".

Yes indeed. Well done Eben.

And of course, well done everyone who has contributed to the Pi's success and the furtherance of it's purpose for being.

If it were a French honor, I'd say "well done"... Here I will say "well deserved". Congratulations!

Keep it up and soon you'll zoom past TimBL.

Nice little piece.

There has been the ongoing issue that, if you mention to Pi to most people, you get a blank look and, "What?" back. Since things like the honors list get fairly wide publicity, I anticipate news organizations in many places will have a, "Who's he?" reaction to Eben's CBE, will then dig a little deeper, and do reports on the Pi (I note that the video in the linked BBC report is old enough that it is citing Pi sales of 8 million; surely that is 10 million by now).

So...this is not only very well earned by Eben, but it is probably good for the Pi, as well.
