Did you add a space? Can you paste the file?

Code: Select all

CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--ppapi-flash-path=/usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins/libpepflashplayer.so --ppapi-flash-version=21.0.0.182-r1 -password-store=detect -user-data-dir"
CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--disable-gpu"

Remove the second line and add --disable-gpu to the first at the end with a space. You're overwriting the first with the second so it doesn't work.

Has Chromium been added officially at this point?

For some reason I was able to do an apt-get update and apt-get install chromium-browser tonight successfully.
It's fast and makes using the Raspberry Pi on the web feel normal again.

Hi kusti8,

Thanks and congratulations for you work: awesome!
For my 8th Pi (a Pi 3) I decided it was time to try the GUI (all my others Pi are running headless, text only). I then followed your instructions to install Chromium. Everything smooth even it opens for first time on the page to install your youtube plugin. So easy to install and browsing the web on Pi 3 is perfectly acceptable.
100% good :D

By default Speakit uses some kind of web service. It may have some usage limitations. And sometimes it takes a long time to start at all.

Hi @kusti8, with the release of chromium v50 video loading on websites and animations have started to stutter where it didn't before. Do you know if there's something I have to change or how to fix this?

I've rolled back to v49 and it's working great again.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser=49.0.2623.108-0ubuntu0.14.04.1.1113 chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra=49.0.2623.108-0ubuntu0.14.04.1.1113

Do you have enough space? Something is wrong with your filesystem and it may be corrupted. Try starting new.

How would I go about if I want to basically disable chromium's cache to reduce disk usage? I already tried the "--disk-dir-cache-size=N" flag with no effect and then just simply set ".cache/chromium" to read-only, which seems to work, but I don't know if that's the proper way.

That seems the only way, but are you sure you're seeing significant disk usage from caching ?

I'm not sure, but as long as chromium runs the green LED flashes more frequently than it does when I close chromium. I'm also using the Pi as a desktop replacement, so I'm basically trying to increase the lifetime of the SD card until I get an external harddrive.

I wouldn't worry about it. Good SD cards last a long time and I doubt this will make any difference.

All browsers cache a lot (though kweb has an option to disable caching, but it will slow down web access) and it is a wear on the SD card. My first SD card started to wear out after about 6 months. That's when I decided to move the root file system to a HDD. All my RPis are running from HDD now; it's much faster and more reliable - and much more disk space / $ (and I always need a lot).
