Snze,
Isn't it 'he worked it out with a pencil'?
Isn't that what I said? Give or take. The paper is important.

I'm only telling it the way I heard it back in 1974 or so. Worked for me.

Speaking of which, back then two nuns were sharing a bath to save energy during the oil crisis.

One nun asked, "where's the soap?". The other nun replied "Yes, it does doesn't it"

That's not funny. The original "computers" were, mostly young women. As were the original network switches and routers.

Do you have a link to a higher res version of that image?

That's an incredibly subtle comment that took a while to sink in. The original users of the tip, ring and sleeve (TRS) plugs to connect calls were usually women.

Exactly.

Then came Strowger and his switch. A glorified relay.

What get's me is that there must have been millions of Strowger switches clunking away in the 1970's and 80's still. I remember peeking into a telephone exchange as a kid and seeing racks and racks of them.

Where did they all go? I have never seen one up close. They don't turn up in surplus stores or ebay.

And of course, pneumatic tubes. I don't know if any of those had switches but they were fundamentally point to point. If they did, women would be the ones doing the work.

They've got a working one complete with some loop-disconnect handsets the the visitors can dial at the Science Museum, Exhibition Rd, South Kensington.

One of them was my mother, in Liverpool during WW11.
She would tell me about the times after a late shift, heading back down to the Pier Head, dodging the bombs in the blitz. None of this cowering in a shelter, when your bed's calling.

I was in the Science Museum Kensington just be for Christmas. Killing an hour or two before flying out of Blighty.

It was very distressing. Lots of nice displays of items that were common or garden parts of my young life.

Eight bit computers, telephones, typewriters, etc, etc.

Amazingly if you stay at the Eden Plaza hotel or better still the Strathmore, you are only across the road from the Kensington museums, and they are very cheap. The Strathmore is luxurious, the former home of the Queen's grand father.

Old jokes are the best.

Everyone likes to poke fun at JS by dredging up those examples. In practice they rarely cause a problem.

And, well, every programming language has it's jokes.

Which is why I posted it here, rather than in a serious thread. FWIW, I can't see any problem with the last example, but 'fooNaN'? that's crazy. ;)
