Cases for Pi and 7" touch screen?

Mon Nov 02, 2015 1:31 pm

Hi all

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question. If not I apologise and please educate me :)

I am looking at buying and using the official 7" touchscreen but I want to buy a nice case for it and the Raspberry Pi to actually use, not for development.

I can't find anything except the stand though which does not encase everything (the back of the screen and Pi is exposed). Does any one know of any where selling complete cases?

Thanks

I know of only one: Multicomp CBRPP-TS-BLK/WHT (you can do a Google search based on this manufacturer plus model name). One possible problem is that, based on the photos I have seen of it, the case doesn't appear to have access holes or at least a removable cover for connecting a HAT, other GPIO device, or the camera module.

Here's some images of a 3D printed case I designed for the 7" LCD display with Raspberry Pi 2

The LCD display sits neatly into the case and is secured with 4 x M3 screws. There is a raised lip surrounding the screen to provide some protection.
The rear case cover has 4 interlock tabs to allow easy access to the pcb for development work.
Cutouts are provided for access to all the peripheral connectors on the Raspberry Pi 2 and B+
Slots are provided on both the bottom and top faces of the rear cover to allow convection cooling, as well as provision of slots and mounting holes for a small 25mm cooling fan on the side face.
I also included mounting tabs for the camera module and also a slot on the back face to allow access to the GPIO pins.

It's a work in progress. All feedback appreciated.

I've got one of the multicomp cases and as as PiBrain says you don't have access to the expansion port so it might do what you want

ozzytom,
This design looks fantastic.
Do you have STL files?
I'd be happy to print one up and give you feedback.

Thanks

I posted a general reply, new to the forums, quoting Ozzytom here.

I'd really like to try printing one of your cases. This is what I've been looking for.
Let me know.
Thanks,
John

G'day John
Yes I have the .stl files.
I tried uploading them with my post but they were rejected by the file loader.....

What's your email address and I'll send them thru.

I printed them on a Flashforge CreatorPro with good results.
The LCD base took 8 hours to print and the rear cover about 3.5 hours using 1.75mm ABS

The rear case has a small support filler on each of the 4 interlock clips which needs to be filed carefully with a flat needle file. Aim for a 2.2mm gap.
If the clips break I also have provision for 4 screw holes to secure it to the RasPi board via 2.5mm threaded standoffs.

what 3D printer do you have?

My printer is a Delta printer built from the design of Johann Rochell, with modifications by me.

Thanks so much!

OK,
Got Ozzytom's files and printed them.
Very nice design, but its cold in my shop, and I had great difficulty printing ABS for the large shell without curling off the build platform. I ended up printing it twice, once in full, which was the warped print, and once where I only printed up to where it started to warp. I split the warped print and attached it to the good rear section from the partial print.
Attached are some photos. You can see how the 210mm diagonal piece is as big as my delta printer can print.
Clears the limits by 5 mm on each end.

Overall, excellent design. Everything lined up very well. I had to enlarge the rear screw holes a bit to get the screws in, but that is probably due to my ABS shrinkage. Took 2 seconds with a 1/8" bit, not a problem.

I like how the rear section attaches with built in clips. It just slides down into place. I reinforced the clips with cyanoacrylate glue. It just wicks up the grooves in the print build and strengthens the ABS. I've been doing this for critical parts for a while now. Works really well. Be sure it is fully dried before assembly, of course, or you'll have a permanent attachment.

Thanks to Ozzytom for the design.

Your image links don't work. Two reasons
1. The URLs are invalid they don't display if I try to access them directly
2. URLs used in [IMG]...[/IMG] tags on the forum must be a direct link to the image that ends with .GIF, .JPG or .PNG

Stick them on http://imgur.com and it gives you a copy'n'paste BBCode link.

Dougie,

Thanks for the sanity check.
I posted these from my One Drive account.
All I had to do was switch to incognito mode and get the links from outside my account.
Re-pasted the now account-independent links and all appears good.

That design looks great ozzytom, exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. I don't suppose you're planning on mass producing them are you? As I don't have a 3D printer. :D

Hiya ozzytom I'm about 300ks nth of you. any chance of sending the stl. files to me? Just got into this pi stuff as I have time to spare now as I recently retired. Used to work with trs80 and dos years ago and like the idea of this little unit giving me fun. Needless to say cold is the least of probs here as you would also know.
email is pcpetry (at) gmail (dot) com. I have a Da Vinci printer which works well at the moment but looking to flash it later to a better user friendly system like repetier.
Oops just noticed its for a earlier model pi mine is the pi 2 B+ but my mate has the earlier one like the photos so still useful.

cheers

Hello Pete,

The case fits both the RPi B+ and the RPi2 B. They have the same dimensional configuration of ports and connectors.

I have sent you the .stl files. There are three files. One is the LCD surround enclosure, the second is the rear clip on cover for the RPi, and the third file is the support stand I have made to allow the LCD to be inclined for better viewing on a desktop.
You will need an operational print area of 200 x 120mm for the LCD enclosure file.... about 230mm diagonal !!!

Photos attached.

Great design ozzietom. I'm also interested although i don't have a 3d printer I'll source one somewhere.
Can you send me the files to dvaitman (at) yahoo (dot) com ? I'm based in Melbourne

I hope you are still monitoring this board... I've spent lots of time trying to find something exactly like this for my new display. I live in the States and there doesn't seem to be anything being sold here that meets my needs. Would you be willing to send me the file? I would be very grateful!

Have a great day!

Ozzytom, I can only concur with the rest of the people in here praising your casing. I'm putting together a dash mounted version of the pi, and are very interested in using your STL's as a starting point. I'd probably do some modifications to them (such as facing the camera out backwards and ajusting the stand), but it would save me a ton of work. My e-mail is l.o.sikkeland (at) gmail dot com.

Thanks in advance!

Did anyone actually get the files from "Ozzytom" and can share them (upload them somewhere)?

Or send them to my e-mail "obmwo (at) 2die4 [dot] com", i would be very gratefull for it.
