I just loaded the .img file to an SD card and fired up the Raspi with it...easy to set up following the instructions and the result was the config process for Ubuntu...local, keyboard, user, etc. It was a a bit slow but not serious. Once the config was done, the OS loaded and seems to be surprisingly responsive. It was great fun to see firefox running so well on the $35 wonder. I really have just begun to evaluate but it is impressive so far. I need to get the i2c module loaded so that my RTC will work but amazed at the applications that are already loaded like guvcview. Congrats and keep up the good work!!

Re: Ubuntu MATE 15.10 for Raspberry Pi 2

Mon Oct 26, 2015 2:27 pm

I hate to be a sore tooth, but I have a problem.

Here's what I did:
1. I downloaded the Ubuntu MATE 15.10 for raspberry pi 2 from the European CDN on this website: http://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/
2. I unzipped it with no errors
3. I first tried writing it to an SD card with my pi by using:

Code: Select all

sudo ddrescue -d -D --force ubuntu-mate-15.10-desktop-armhf-raspberry-pi-2.img /dev/sda
4. After the write was finished I shut my pi down.
5. I plugged the freshly written SD card into my pi and plugged my pi into power.
6. The yellow led flashes like its doing something, but the screen is black.
7. The monitor is sensing something plugged in, but I just have a blank screen.
8. I tried leaving it like that for an hour, but the blank screen remained.

Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. :ugeek:
NOTE: The yellow led does not blink or have a pattern. It flashes like its thinking (like a normal pi).

What type of Displays are you using?

I had problems with my DVI display because hdmi_drive was set to 2 per default in /boot/config.txt.
After setting it to hdmi_drive=1 everything worked fine again.
But I didn't got a black screen, only a slightly off center picture.

Mine is a Samsung Syncmaster with DVI input. I will try again making the change you suggest.

Update:
Yes hdmi_drive=1 worked here :D

GREAT!!! Now it works.

Here's how to fix it:
1. Plug your SD card into a computer
2. It should show up as PI_BOOT
3. Open PI_BOOT
4. Find and open the config.txt file
5. Change

Code: Select all

hdmi_drive=2
to

Code: Select all

hdmi_drive=1
6. Save the file and eject the SD card
7. It should be fixed!

All credit goes to neo2001 for pointing that out.

EDIT: See this post for updated results:
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=124572

Now that I can see it, I have a question.

How do I install Kodi so it works? This is how I installed it:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi
Here'e my problem and what I did:
1. I double-clicked the desktop icon
2. The screen blanks, and about 30 seconds later, the screen comes back
3. Running from the terminal non-root I get:

Code: Select all

someone@somewhere:~$ kodi
/usr/lib/kodi/kodi-xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Crash report available at /home/someone/kodi_crashlog-20151027_164340.log
someone@somewhere:~$
The part of the crash log that concerns us is this:

Code: Select all

16:43:38 T:1875943424 WARNING: Visual 0x21 of the SDL window is not suitable, looking for another one...
16:43:38 T:1875943424 ERROR: Failed to determine egl config for visual info
16:43:38 T:1875943424 ERROR: Previous line repeats 236 times.
16:43:38 T:1875943424 ERROR: EGL/GLX Error: vInfo is NULL!
16:43:38 T:1875943424 INFO: GLES: Maximum texture width: 2048
16:43:38 T:1875943424   DEBUG: EGL_EXTENSIONS: EGL_KHR_get_all_proc_addresses EGL_KHR_gl_colorspace EGL_KHR_surfaceless_context EGL_MESA_configless_context

############### END LOG FILE ################

############ END Kodi CRASH LOG #############
Otherwise, great OS! It is a HUGE improvement from Ubuntu MATE 15.04. It is very responsive and easy to navigate. Thanks for all the help so far.

Can't really help you with the Kodi error - maybe you have a better chance of finding an answer here:
http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=166

But if you want to use the Pi exclusively for Kodi anyway, I definitely would recommend using OpenELEC because it comes already optimized for the Pi/Pi2.

Great job! Just installed on 2 RPi 2 B devices and works like a charm.

Just having some problems in syncing the system time from the RTC chip DS3231. I'm working on it to find out why, see my other thread on this...

I'm up to my elbows in stuff at the moment but I will certainly be giving this a try when I get a moment. I use Linux Mint + MATE on both my PC and my laptop: it's an environment I like and am familiar with.

In case you want to access the UbuntuMate workstation with a VNC client here the steps:

1) On the shell prompt, type: sudo apt-get install tightvncserver

2) With you favorite text editor,create a text file "/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf" with the following contents:

[VNCServer]
enabled=true
port=5900
width=1360
height=768
depth=16

The value of width and height describes the window resolution when connecting with a VNC client. Other working resolutions are possible with: 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x854, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1400x1050, 1440x900, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1792x1344, 1856x1392, 1920x1200, 1920x1220, 2560x1600.

3) On the shell prompt, type: sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart

4) Then use your favourite VNC client, and type as target host i.e. "mypi.local" without precising any port number.

Hello all,

I too am having grief with the display on Ubuntu 15.10. Upon first boot, the display got shifted about a quarter of a screen width to the right and the rightmost quarter is not visible. I tried modifying various parameters in /boot/config.txt but have not managed to solve the problem.

Any ideas and help will be much appreciated.

Try adding this to your /boot/config.txt file:

Code: Select all

disable_overscan=1
Or, try messing with the display parameters:

Code: Select all

overscan_left=24, overscan_right=24,
overscan_top=24, overscan_bottom=24

Or simply rip all of those parameters out and let your RPi and your TV negotiate their best possible display resolution.

Yes, this worked fine for me and a DVI monitor connected with the Pi via a HDMI to DVI cable:
I had to comment out all lines, otherwise black monitor. So now because of video applications there's only one line in the /boot/config.txt file:

Code: Select all

gpu_mem=128
By the way, Ubuntu Mate 15.04 for the Pi² had a working config.txt (also commented out, I think) but just with Ubuntu Mate 15.10 for the Pi² the config.txt didn't work for my monitor and the other posters here.

My view with config.txt is that I only add things that are needed to make my RPi work. I don't add parms just because I can.

The most complex config is on my RPi that has the camera and an IR receiver

Code: Select all

dtparam=i2c=on,spi=on
dtoverlay=lirc-rpi,gpio_in_pin=23,gpio_in_pull=high
dtoverlay=sdhost
gpu_mem=128
start_x=1

I am new to this whole Raspberry Pi thing, and to computers in general, but this is the OS that I am most excited about using. I have been playing around with Raspbian, and I have already downloaded Ubuntu 15.10, so I am ready to install it. I hope I do everything right.
