Opening files on my LAN

Mon May 11, 2015 5:55 am

I am running Raspbian on a RaspPi2 B. I can access my network computers from Raspbian through the File Manager. If I click on a file from a network Windows PC shared folder to open on the Pi, the correct application opens on the Pi to run that file to open, for example the doc, pdf, txt, file, but the file does not load (the application remains empty - unless - it is an image file such as a jpg and that is viewed on the Pi. If I copy the file through the network and paste it on the Pi, it copies very quickly, and then I can open it on the Pi.

Just curious why? And is there something to configure to not have to copy and paste the file to the Pi and open it on the Pi.

Thanks.

What app or plug-in would you like to open the file? For instance, from your shared folder if you choose to open a doc file with libreoffice on the RPi, what happens? Do you have libreoffice installed?

Hi!

How do you access your network shares? Via samba?

Samba frequently has problems with remote files. Better to work on local copies and store the new version back to the remote storage place.
Kind regards

Yes, libreoffice is installed and Write opens if I try to open a doc file on the network - the write doc that opens is blank. Same if I try to open a txt file the installed text editor opens and that document is blank. The only time the resulting application view is not blank is with an image file.

Samba is installed and this is what is is accessing what is shared on the network. All networked computers and drives are shown in the Raspbian file manager under Network. The Pi does not appear at all on any of the other computers on the network.

If Samba has problems with remote files I will just continue to cut and paste. I was trying to avoid this with large files but I have a 16 gb usb stick attached so there should be plenty of room for the largest.

Thanks.
