Screen reader (Orca)

I am sorry if this has been asked before I did a search but couldn't see a mention.

Can anyone tell me if orca (Screen reader) is included by default in any of the distributions that are available for the Pi?

At the moment I use a free (NVDA) screen reader on Windows but I have used orca in the past on Linux and would love to be able to use the Pi.

just checked yum in the fedora remix and it's there and i'd suspect in debian too. don't know how well it'll work though as some tings I thought would run great are kinda of sucky on the raspi and some stuff I thought would suck runs really well. oh well such is life

I finally got an email saying it's been shipped - yay! - so I'm going to try this asap and will post how well it works as I'm sure there are more than me with a sight problem who want to use the Pi

Well it took few days as I'm not the most experience Linux user

But after much fiddling I got ORCA running so I can now use my Pi properly even though I can't see it

Good for you! I hope you share with us your experiences as some one with sight problems because it will be very useful for the work being done to create the educational pack for use in schools.

Certainly will - I will use it for a few days then report back how how I get on with it.

As I said I'm not very good with Linux and was having to tell my other half what to do to get it going. I will summarize here but with apologies as i'll no doubt explain it all wrong

I am using the debian image,

I set the Pi to auto login and automatically go into the GUI using the tutorial I found here.
I also used the modprobe command mentioned elsewhere to get the sound to work.
Installed the synaptic package manager
Did a search for screen reader with that and installed it from there.
The first time it launches it talks you through it's setup then reboot and it's sorted.

I'll let you know how mine works out, I'll be using Orca from the Debian distro, otherwise a big TV and magnifier. I've just got to get some USB leads to make more USB sockets etc. - Claire

just got my raspberry pi yesterday, got to get some leads and a keyboard and then I can get orca up and running.

From http://wiki.debian.org/Orca you can do :
sudo aptitude install gnome-orca
Then "orca -t" to configure it.

Can you share how you got Orca going? Which distro? I have just got my Pi and will need to do the same. And there are others on the Programmer-L mailing list who are interested in VI use of the Pi
