Pololu Dagu Rover 5 and Raspberry Pi

Sun Jul 14, 2013 3:38 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm totally new in this and because of that I have just one simple question.

I would like to create a robot which would be controlled using smart phone. I have decided to use following components:
- Dagu Rover 5 Tracked Chassis with Encoders : http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1551
- Pololu RP5/Rover 5 Expansion Plate RRC07A (Narrow) Solid Black : http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1531
- Raspberry Pi (to connect smart phone and Dagu Rover platform)

Is this all that I need of the components or is there something else that would be useful to add? Do any know is this may idea using this components possible?

Regards

You'll also need a motor controller of some kind, e.g. LM298 based

You may want to consider Laika (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/eig ... s?ref=live), they have done a lot of work with the rover.

I've got no connection with the project other than as a backer who wants the project to succeed.

Gordon

I've done something similar:
http://raspberrywebserver.com/gpio/pifa ... ry-pi.html.

I used a Pi Face to drive the motors:
http://raspberrywebserver.com/gpio/piface/piface.html

The GPIO outputs can't supply enough current to drive motors, so you could connect GPIO to a breadboard and use an LM298, but using a Pi Face simplifies the electronics.

Thanks a lot on answers all of you,

I now have new list of components:
Platform - http://www.robotshop.com/dagu-rover-5-4 ... assis.html
Expansion slot - http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1531
Motor controller - http://www.robotshop.com/dagu-4-channel ... ler-2.html
Raspberry Pi
Additional 5V power for controllers (motor controller and Raspberry Pi)
Is this list of components correct? Is all this components can be connect to each other? Do anyone have some suggestions?

I have one more question:
Is possible to directly connect smartphone to Raspberry Pi via USB for controlling? Which options for directly communication of Raspberry Pi and smartphone (Android) i have? Wifi? Bluetooth?

I used wifi with my Pi. I installed Apache and wrote some scripts to control the Pi from my laptop.

Note that the robot comes with a battery holder for 6 AA batteries. You might want to get some high capacity rechargeable batteries.

Thanks on answer,

If I correctly understand you, you create WiFi network on PC and Pi connect on that network using simple WiFi module?
Is possible to set Pi as AP and then, directly, connect smartphone on that network for remote control?

OK. I know for that issue about battery. I will consider options with one battery to power motors and controllers latter. For now this OK for me.

I used my wireless router as the AP. I have a USB wifi module connected to my Pi. The Pi and my laptop both connect to my wireless router.

I installed Apache so that I can serve web pages and scripts from my Pi (see http://raspberrywebserver.com/cgiscripting for simple examples of web scripting). On my laptop, I just have to open a browser and go to http://192.168.0.4/index.html.

I don't know much about the motor controller that you're using, but if you can write a script that controls it from a command line, then you can probably get it to work in a web script. If your phone has a browser, you should be able to use your phone instead of a laptop.

Fix with Arduino and Raspberry:

Arduino + Raspberry PI + Dagu 5 Rover + Node.js - http://mbfu.it/r/om
