Dead Raspberry Pi ?

Hi all,

I have a problem with my Raspberry Pi (model B, 1st Rev) with power issues since last night : I went to sleep, it was perfectly working, I woke up and it didn't work anymore.

When I try to power it through micro-USB connector, I get 5.15V just outside power supply, but only 2.15V at RG2 voltage regulator and test points TP1 and TP2 (same voltages with an iPad power charger) and C2 capacitor seems to be warm. PWR and OK led are off.

When I try to power it through GPIO pins, I get 4.95V just outside power supply, about 4.90V at test points TP1 and TP2. PWR and OK led are off.

Do you have an idea where the problem may be ? Or do I have a fried Pi ?

There is a linear voltage regulator that reduces the 5V to 3V3. The power led is connected to that 3V3 power rail. It's relatively easy to measure that voltage on one of the regulator pins. If it's the regulator itself that is defective, you might be able to replace it. If something is shorting or overloading the 3V3 power rail, it's probably fubarred. If it's still under warranty, you might request an RMA to exchange it.

I suppose 3.3V regulator is RG2, the one next micro USB plug ?

I get 2.5V when I power the PI through micro USB, and 0V when I power it through GPIO pins. And when I power Pi through GPIO pin or micro USB, C6 capacitor becomes really hot (I can't touch it more than 2 seconds).

As this C6 capacitor is just here to stabilize power input, is it safe to remove it ?

Yes. Quite a few people have reported that they have accidentally broken C6 off the board when plugging in power. As long as your power supply is stable it should work.

I've tried to boot Raspberry Pi after I removed C6 capacitor : voltage at TP1 and TP2 goes to 4.8V, but the Pi does not boot (only PWR led is on), and after 10 minutes many parts are really hot : diod near 0.7A fuse, main chipset, metal cover of HDMI plug, etc.)

I suppose the Pi is really dead.
