I downloaded android_sd_2tar and extracted the contents.
There were 3 images. None of them booted.

I used class 4 SD cards: Kingston and Sandisk.

The same cards booted with Openelec and Raspbian.

I believe there is already a copy of Android 4 out there compiled for the same processor as that used in the Raspberry Pi. A company called Rikomagic have a small usb device using the same processor available for under $50 which uses Android 4.0. Has anyone tried to simply use this image on the Pi?
here's the blurb about it
"
The new Rikomagic MK802 II is the latest generation of Android 4.0 Mini PC. It is based on the incredibly popular Rikomagic MK802 which has already set the standard of Android Mini PC’s.
The new MK802 II has a revised form factor which not only feels more compact it also allows easier connection to TV/Displays by using a full size HDMI connector which is located conveniently at the end of the device. The all new ESD circuitry provides trouble free operation on all makes and models of TV/Display. Connectivity has been improved further by the use of micro USB ports and the device now has a total of 3 USB ports despite its incredibly compact form factor.
The MK802 II now features on board power management which allows the user to soft start/shutdown the device eliminating the possibility of data corruption.
At the heart of the Rikomagic MK802 II is the Allwinner A10 Cortex-A8 high speed processor. The redesigned PCB layout of the device allows a true clock speed of 1GHz for much snappier performance. The increased power of the A10 combined with 1GB of onboard High Speed DDR3 RAM means this remarkable device can deliver hardware performance that is close to a desktop computer.
With the MK802 II the user can enjoy 1080P HD video, Access to the internet via the built in browser which has support for rich HTML 5 and Flash content, Play 3D games, Stream music and Download Apps from the Google Play Store, all on a TV with a HDMI connection!

Most of these appear to be sold on ebay from china! so the image for the android must be floating about out there somewhere.

actually allwinner a10 is not the same chip as the raspi. allwinner is arm7 while raspi is arm6 (older architecture, therefore not compatible totally)
we have to wait for broadcom to release the android drivers to release the power of hardware accelerated gui (as we have working copies of android, but only withouf hw acceleration, that's why it is slow). unfortunately these binaries are closed-source that's why we depend on broadcom now

True not the same chip, RPi is an older one.

I think RPi missed the Skype bandwagon, if Skype is ever released in a reliable iteration for the RPi it would be way past the fact and likely far less usable than the modern HDMI jigs already flooding the market with specs about twice better than RPi.

IMHO thinking of RPi as a potential Skype platform is just not the direction of positive outcome. RPi has other uses that it's best suited for. Skype does need performance to be of use to anyone and those HDMI sticks are probably the best bet. Plus Android appears to be the number one selling OS on the mobile market if one would consider volume of sales as a benchmark for such projection (sorry Apple... LOL).

There was an effort to create a Skype application - the last I came to know
was that Micrsoft did not classify the Pi as computer with Linux and therefore
wanted the devs to buy a pricey embedded license.
The SDK did work pretty good , only with the SDK API key , though.
Furthermore the OP wasn't online for quite some time.

Isn't the problem here entirely the broadcom gpu? So looking at other targets won't help, the roku (or is it roku2?) is the only other target on the market that uses the same chip as the pi, don't think it's running android though so no use at all. btw. the android image for the mk802 is on the forum for that website that is selling them, not that it's any use to you :D

the new pi should be able to do it then since it has 512mb of ram

RAM wasn't the limit. Look at the old galaxy ace, it ran android 2.3 on a single core 700MHz ARMv6 (same as the pi basically) with 256mb RAM with a far less capable GPU.

The restriction here is the GPU and floating point units. Android on most phones uses the floating point unit on the CPU and uses the GPU fully. Android on the pi software emulates the GPU (floating point unit may now be hardware accelerated). Software graphics are slow as hell, the pi uses nearly all of its CPU time drawing the android home screen.

Broadcom (who make the CPU and GPU on the pi) have got an internal android version they are working on, due to the GPU driver licensing I dont think it will be open source however once it is released it should make the pi a fully usable android system even on the 256mb models. The 512mb models should run it perfectly fine. My old android handset had a 600MHz ARMv6 CPU with 512mb RAM and a much less powerful GPU and was fine, more power would have been nice, I had to wait a few seconds at the beginning of larger angry birds levels for the physics to settle but once it was running it was fine.

I'm having the same issue as Montekuri which everyone seems to ignore.

I 'burned' the cyanogenmod 7.2 from http://androidpi.wikia.com/wiki/Android_Pi_Wiki to an SD-card but it just doesn't boot on my new Raspberry Pi model B.. Any help?

Hi, I've used Roadkil's Disk Image as explained on http://www.plugpbx.org/?page_id=110

- I extracted the 7z to a folder on my local driver
- I used the tool to 'burn' the img-file to the SD-card
- I inserted the SD-card in the sd-cardslot of the raspberry pi (model b)
- Powered on the Raspberry Pi, screen stayed black.

So you took the literal .img file, not the zip, (no offense just have to make sure ;-) ) and use that guy's tool to write it to your SD card. Can you check to make sure that you wrote the img file to the correct disk? On Windows you won't be able to see anything except the root partition, but there should be a handful of files in it if it wrote successfully (I'm assuming you started with an empty SD card, I know writing the image file with these tools overwrites the contents of the SD card, but I've found it helps from at least a troubleshooting perspective to do a quick format of it first)

I formatted the card first (which actually doesn't matter in this case)

I saw in some posts above that there were other users having the same problem. Montekuri said he swapped out to vt1 or so? How can I do that? Perhaps then I'll see why it's not doing anything?

No one in the team has had this issue with burning the sd cards and having them not boot =/
If someone could send us one of these cards we could investigate

Anyone thinking about porting the version of Android used on the Kindle Fire?
