Using the ethernet port to accept traffic

Hey folks,
I use the wifi for connectivity to my router, is there a way to allow the ethernet port to feed another device? I am installing a DNS server too in to the pi.

There are many ways of configuring the network interfaces on a Pi, but you have to describe what you want, better than that, if you want some useful help.

Good point... I want to connect to my router with wifi but connect my Acurite Access to the ethernet port. I am going to try and install a couple of programs that will grab the feed from the access and reuse them.

The word "feed" is going to cause some confusion, what on earth do you mean by that?
Are you trying to route packets from the wireless interface to the ethernet interface?
Will your RPi be running dnsmasq as a DHCP server?

It does, but what is an "Acurite Access" ? and does it need internet connection ?

Indeed.

I tried some Internet research and found myself looking at a single dead-end page saying they don't work in Europe...

(But I think it is some sort of hub device for home automation sensors?)

How far do you get if you just 'try it and see?'

It does not work as the pi switches over the the eth0 which is looking for the router.

That is under your control and easily rectified. It is a "metric' configuration option in the routing information for Raspbian.

Another thought.

Presumably the Access device has cabled Ethernet connectivity only?

Is it out of the question to connect it to your home router: these usually support wired Ethernet as well as WiFi.

If the cabling is inconvenient, have you considered Powerline devices to extend the wired network to where you need it?


Or people like TPlink have proprietary 'convert WiFi back to Ethernet' devices for a similar price to an RPi board.
