Installing Problems

Wed Sep 04, 2019 1:38 am

This started happening recently. This hasn't happened before, but I keep receiving errors whenever I try to install anything at all. It downloads packages fine, but whenever it meets 50% in the installation process, it quits out with an error "exit status 1" or something. It's super annoying. >:/
The software seems to work fine, but how can I fix this problem in the future?

Okay, so I try to install software (like Thonny and Visual Studio Code), but I receive this error when I try to install, update, or upgrade anything. Including the Raspbian OS.

You have a dependency issue. It even tells you so. This means that one package depends on something that is provided by another package, and the second package is not yet installed or configured. Sometimes you get get into a "chicken and egg" situation where package A depends on package B, and package B depends on package A.

"sudo apt-get check" will tell you more about the issue. There are a number of ways to resolve the issue. The simplest is:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo dpkg –configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
This will attempt to fix the broken dependencies.

Then try to install the package in question. If that does not work you are likely going to have to play with dpkg to resolve the issue. Googling for "linux resolving dependancy issues" will provide more info. The good news is that it is almost always fixable.

Forcing installs sometimes creates this problem.

I tried doing your 3 solutions in order, but they all failed.

I visited this webpage https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... th-apt-get, and tried to follow the same methods this person was doing. I tried using

Code: Select all

sudo apt --fix-broken install
to attempt fixing broken installations, but I receive this error:

Code: Select all

Will this help if I re-install Raspbian? (Installing it in Raspbian, I have 4 other OSes with important data I cannot back up, nor can I afford to be deleted.)
