Raspberry Pi ** Sold over 25million units **

Tue Sep 03, 2019 8:35 am

Hello

I knew Raspberry Pi has sold over 25 million units for 7 years.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/raspb ... 38724.html

It was the information published on March.
Anyway, amazing!!

Does anyone know how many units does it sold now?
I wonder if it is sold over 30 millions??

Thank you for your advice.

I believe the latest figures I saw from a Raspberry Pi employee were in the order of 27 million roughly two weeks ago.

and yet some old computer nerds still claim the C64 was the biggest seller¹ as a home computer because the Raspberry Pi doesn't have a built-in keyboard and that it hasn't kept the same chipset.

Maximum C64 sales are 17M although that's debatable, could be as low as 11. We may actually have sold more Pi3 than even the high number. Not sure of exact figures though. Whichever way of looking at it, we have sold a LOT of Pi. Twice the production rate of the C64 (300k a month vs >600k month for Pi IIRC, but I do not know exact figures)

Pounce... So current sales rate upwards of 7 million per year (perhaps even 7.5 million/year). Combining all the (minimal) data I've gleaned, that should make current sales total at least 28 million, and pretty definitely over 30 million before the end of this year.

Yearly sales do vary according to demand - of course the Pi4 launch created a MASSIVE spike, and AFAIK still haven't completely caught up with demand.

30 million would a great time to put a ‘present’ in the box

Maybe a tour around the plant and Pi towers?

Obviously you may need to ‘structure’ the build schedule to get it into the retail chain and limit to none staff etc etc (and put a daft question in for those countries that cannot have give-always etc).
Need Pi spray - these things are breeding in my house...

That's great news!

Sadly, these facts won't help my Commodore-partisan friends. "It's not a home computer because it's not" seems to be the best argument. It's up there with “REDACTED means REDACTED” in terms of making actual sense. They've maybe been invested in being members of Toronto PET Users Group for a bit too long.

My impression is that many Pi owners own more than one. Is it possible even though fewer were sold that there were a larger number of separate households that had C64 machines? One might also note that many Pi computers are being used in industrial settings.

Hard to say... Certainly among active posters here, multiple--not infrequently large multiples--of Pis under one roof are common, but it's unclear how general that is.

What will the end product be 25million programmers, 5.000 Electronics Engineers

Well, the aim of the Pi is to encourage programmers (except they call it "coding" now).. Maybe not 25 million, but tens of thousands would be good.

I totally agree with what you are saying. They
Are over stretching the number of Pis being
Sold. But learning electronics gives you a better
Understanding of how things work, It takes the
Mystery out of what is in side those little black
Things with pins sticking out, the pleasure you
Will get building a circuit, then seeing it work
And knowing how to repair it if it don’t work
Then your coding skills will let you design a
Programme to let the Pi control it

Software engineers count, too ;)
I have no idea how large the tip of spear (engineering degree) would be, 1 in a few thousands looks possible?

I hope Pi's impact on the grave issue of "digital illiteracy" to be much stronger than that. Upcoming generations need to catch up with technology or their future will be bleak.

Anyways, 25 Mil is just a beginning I understand.

Who will be the lucky owner of the 31,415,926th Pi?

Indeed... Pi 4/4 in a solid gold case. A bit bling, but very good for cooling.

Even better would be Boron Arsenide.
