Is there some configuration that can stop desktop items appearing on both monitors ?

Not to my knowledge. It's probably theoretically possible to tell PCmanFM to only show the contents of the Desktop folder on one monitor, but it would be a code change, not a config change. I'll put it on the list of things to look into at some point, as I can see why it is annoying...

Can we start a "snags" list somewhere ? For example it seems that minimizing a window on the second monitor and then expanding it does not remove the "[ ..... ]" around the window name in the task bar.

Would like to know when it will be possible to do a dist-upgrade from Stretch to Buster for a Pi 3b. I have a webserver set up with a lot of data and I don't want to start all over.

I finished upgrade of stretch on Pi 3B+ to buster using described procedure and all works fine. I have now upgraded kernel to the latest 4.19.56 and no issues. During kernel upgrade it warns me that my boot partition is small (actually it is only 41MB) but so far so good. Not sure if 256 MB boot partition size applies only to Pi 4 or later more stuff will be added for other Pis as well and small partitions might be not enough.

Yes, they can. There will be no particular benefit unless you want to run OpenGL applications on the desktop - it will then use hardware acceleration to run them.

We don't support multiple desktop switching (it was removed in wheezy) so the tools to support it are not guaranteed to work in our image; use them at your own risk and don't expect them to be supported.

I expect I said so at the time, but this is very short sighted ! And even more so now that the PI4 is capable of running more things at once and is being positioned as a PC replacement, then the lack of multiple desktops looks an even poorer decision.

But having just installed the plugin to try it, yes, that menu option does start obconf.

The new package doesn't seem to have updated on the servers yet - if you are in a hurry, just temporarily change /etc/apt/sources.list.d/raspi.list to access the stretch version of the repo and install it from there.

Just got a load of kernel updates but still no obconf. Tried changing that file but apt-get install claims "obconf is already the newest version (1:2.0.4+git20150213-2)."

TBH, you might be the only person I know who uses multiple desktops. I always find them very clunky.

I just updated the OS and I am another user that will miss multiple desktops a lot. In my opinion it allows to nicely separate applications especially when you work on a single screen. I hope there will be a solution or my productivity will be much lower with RPI.

Just make sure you're up to date, then just add the desktop pager to the tool bar and configure the number of desktops you want... Simples

You got exactly that what is in the specs, all you need to do is to install a 64bit linux distribution.

I have a desktop icon in /home/pi/desktop that runs an executable script

In order to run this without being prompted whether I really want to run it, I can set the "Don't ask options on launch executable file" preference in File Manager. This seems to be a change from Stretch (a retrograde change for my use case).

How can I set this option from a script?

I.e. I have a script that runs on a fresh Raspbian image that downloads and installs some software and creates the desktop icon. I want that script to set the File Manager option, rather than having to set it through the File Manager GUI.

...basically Desktop which is Lite + Raspberry Pi Desktop.

That will never be a recommended procedure. Raspbian/Debian stable is not a rolling release. With each new major version, starting with a clean install is always the recommended procedure.

Some people seem to upgrade successfully, but problems are not always immediately obvious and can be discovered later. Troubleshooting upgraded systems often requires more time and effort than starting over (and then you start over anyway).

When attempting an upgrade it's best to perform it on a backup card and keep your original safe.

It's unlikely Raspbian will be moving to 64 bit any time soon. Raspbian is designed to run on every Raspberry Pi ever made, not just the latest models. There are some 64 bit Linux distros available, but as far as I know they do not fully support the new Pi4 yet. There are people working on that, and Gentoo is booting, but support for new models always takes some time (Raspbian is the only OS that works on release day).

What you bought is hardware (Raspbian Linux is free), and you got what the specs say. If a full 64-bit OS was a requirement you should have done some research before rushing out to buy one.

Yes, so much is perfectly obvious from the website, but once again you don't actually address the question.

I am sure many others would share my view that Java is essential these days, not just recommended, and should be included in the Desktop release, as it was with Stretch Desktop release

The light weight desktop is for people who want to mainly use their RPi on the internet, & it fills this role quite well - if you want it, just add it - it's a lot easier to add stuff than to find what it's called to remove it, plus it takes up less room to start with.
