Case for both the Pi and a 2.5" HD/SSD?

Hello,

was wondering if there is a way to have a single solution for both a Pi and a 2.5" HD as to have either a file server or, like in my own idea, a music server with music on a fast and capable 2.5" SSD rather than on an USB dongle. Of course it should somehow have a bus faster than USB otherwise it would make no sense to have a fast drive on a slow bus.

Any suggestion?

some nice tidy builds have used a HDD or SSD as the base or top of an enclosure solution using its corner screwholes as the mounting point for brass stand off columns.

But as of now USB2 is the only available interface for external storage,,,

it may provide a sata interface but it looks like it relies on usb2 to connect to the pi so the bottleneck remains the same..

before dismissing usb storage especially ssd storage it might be worth a 'suck n see' to evaluate performance.

for a networked file server the network will probably be the real world limitation on file transfer speeds..

While the articles are a bit dated, the USB2.0 limitation is still the same.

Well so far it seems these boards use the USB bus which sure is faster than going through ETH in my case of utilisation of the Pi (music server) even to it won't do justice to a dedicated SSD but given the prices for small sized ones (with a 256GB I'd do more than fine at hosting my music) it sure is more convenient and faster than a USB dongle (I checked for a 128GB and they go for about 30 euros here in Italy whilst a 256GB 2.5" SSD sells for about 50).

I've seen some users to screw, as suggested above, the Pi straight onto the 2.5" case since two of the holes on the Pi board and disc case match, and then connect the two via a short USB cable and power it all with two separate power adapters, the board solution is just "cleaner" and more flexible and my goal is to have the less possible cables running around, there already is too many.

p.s. I found there is this board https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/raspberr ... 13288.html which could serve my purpose but just wondering if that cable which runs from the add on board to the HAT connector makes then it impossible to add an HAT board should I ever need.

it looks like the gpio header attachement is only supplying the +5v and gnd from the base board which appears to have its data connection to the pi routed via the usb interface. If so you should be able to use any hats you want and simply move the gnd and +5v connections to the top board in your HAT stack Without problems. Hat compatibility assumed

Thank you for your reply Phil, I have not (yet) any plan for HATs but might in the future if the whole thing (Pi as a music server) proves useful otherwise I have other ideas on how to use the Pi, SDR receiver, air and maritime traffic tracker... you name it
