Unable to Boot RPI 3B from SSD disk

Hi,

Is your pi failing to reboot or cold boot ?

My own experience here is that the type of SATA --> USB controller will dictate whether reboot works or not, nothing on the OS side will help if it does not work, one thing you may want to try if you have one if attach a USB hub and connect the drive to that.

I have had good results with cheap USB3 caddies from Amazon...

On wednesday I'll receive a new sata adapter, let's see if somethings changes. I read the other article you provided (tnx) and I already applied all the suggestions.

I had no issues with cold boot, only rebooting when it would hang, changing the adapter worked for me, the case I got was only 6UKP, it may not be the greatest quality but it works and that is good enough for me. Good luck !

That linked article contained a lot of old information. With the latest Raspbian images all that extra file editing is no longer needed (Raspbian now uses PARTUUID to avoid device misdirection). Just burn-n-boot now (with a compatible USB drive).

The ELUTENG adapter cable used to work great, but it was recently replaced by a newer model that doesn't work as well. The newer model has a blue SATA connector (which appears to be the one you ordered). The older one looked like this (click).

Updating Raspbian helps, though. So if you can boot with that adapter, then run:

It may work for you. The newer adapter is a bit picky about the SSD drive. It works better with some drives and worse with others (the older version worked with everything I plugged into it, regardless of OS updates).

bad news after testing the Eluteng adapter. it works most of the time, but not always. eg just now it hanged up at rainbow screen with the green led flashing 7 times (it should mean kernel.img not found)

to this raspi there are no other devices connected on usb ports.

But still no luck; everyonce in a while (after sudo reboot) it hangs. With powercycle it seems always working.

should I give up and surrend to use the micro SD for boot and then SSD as main partition? or there is something else I could test?

In case I would use the SSD just for boot could you please give me an howto of the steps to do? I think I should put just a minimal boot image on the SD to format as FAT32 and in bootconfig tell the PARTUID of /root being the external ssd, right?

Can you try a different SATA to USB3.0 cable?

This one worked for me, RPi3B+ natively booting up a 1TB 2.5" HDD in a quattro case. (no microSD in microSD slot)
perfect match.

HDDs consume more power than SSDs

my HDD boot up setup has no edits in its configuration files, just flashed the Raspbian Stretch using etcher, boot up, install fave packages, that's it!

I've another one from Inateck (the one with power adapter), that is 99% the same and was quite good tested. Do you think it's worth a test?

what I've recommended already worked for me. I have one lying around somewhere waiting to be used....

too bad the original Eluteng SATA cable is no longer available. It was HawaiianPi (thanks!!!) that introduced me to that. I think I got myself 4 of those.

Nowadays I check first the chipset used by the adapter, before getting a different one....

the powered one is good to test, but it has to be powered. Unpowered and it might not work

UA1001 has chipset ASM1153E, the one you suggested (UA1003) has ASM1153E(UASP). So basically they've the same chipset, but your one has UASP. Could it make a difference? I've bought another one (from Sabrent) with UASP (still ASM1153 chipset) and it doesn't work :/

Reading back from you first post way back September, it seems you were using Sandisk SDSSD120. Is it the same one that is failing now?

I also have Sandisk SSD, its a SDSSD240 (240GB). Tested both the Eluteng and the Inateck adapter on that SSD, boots and reboots fine.
might try to reconnect it again using the Inateck cable so I can update and upgrade the installed Raspbian Stretch in it.

I replaced Sandisk with a Crucial MX500 (changed to see if something changed). I'm not as lucky as you

I upgraded to Stretch too, without any lucky.

Most of the time it works, but often hangs in various points of the boot process. (I shared boot debug info too)

seems your problem before was caused by insufficient power.
so your current setup is still powered by the Vilros 5v 3A "psu"? I dont know if this PSU was "flagged" before as "unsuitable".

I never tried native USB booting using a 2.0A psu.
All of my PSU are non-RPF PSU rated 5v 3A bought from a reputable online electronics store. I think I have 7 of those.
no load voltage at 5.00v, loaded voltage in running RPi3B+ [this unit, with DAC, USB thumbdrive boot, wireless keyboard/mouse dongle, HDMI monitor] the voltage at one of the USB port reads 5.12v (I measured the voltage on the output pins of the microUSB to breadboard pin adaptor that I made)

using the same non-RPF psu, no problem even when doing HDD boot.

Hi, I tried vilros 3A, vilros 2A, another one no brand 2A but all with same results. But as I use a powered sata-usb adapter it shouldn't be a problem, right? the raspi works perfectly booting from SD card.

Could you please post links to a couple of better PSUs?
