TV Hat / Cable TV

Fri Nov 30, 2018 9:21 pm

Will the TV Hat work with Cable TV input, or only an over the air antenna?

It's over the air (DVB-T) only.

The TV HAT connects to the 40-pin GPIO header and to a suitable antenna, allowing your Raspberry Pi to receive DVB-T2 television broadcasts.

The TV uHAT is - as far as we know - DVB-T/T2 only. DVB-T/T2 are the pair of European OTA standards used in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and some parts of Asia, Africa and a couple of countries in South America. A different standard, DVB-C, is used for European cable.

Whilst some USB DVB-T/T2 tuners also offer DVB-C cable compatibility - the TV uHAT doesn't advertise any DVB-C compatibility (and there is no sign the chipset used has DVB-C support)

NB if you are based in countries in North or South America, Japan, Korea, China and some other parts of Asia, a few countries in Africa etc. your OTA TV won't be DVB-T/T2 either. (Other standards such as ATSC 8VSB, ISDB-T, DTMB etc. are used instead in these regions)

I have neither a TV hat nor a cable TV feed so I cannot do a test to see if the former will work with the latter. However DVB-T and DVB-C are very similar. The vast majority of TVs sold in Europe (including the UK and Ireland) are based on hardware chassis that support both. Regionalisation is done via firmware. I doubt that the chip used in the TV hat was specially developed for it. More likely it is the same (Sony?) chip that is used in many current TV models. Thus I suspect that the TV hat hardware is capable of DVB-C. Maybe just the software needs a little bit of rework.

Maybe.
