Ubuntu with GNOME desktop

Tue Oct 30, 2018 6:13 am

I've heard that the full version of Debian with the GNOME desktop can work on the Raspberry Pi 3. If Debian with GNOME can run on the Pi, why can't Ubuntu run with the GNOME desktop?

Maybe something to do with Ubuntu not agreeing with the way Gnome 3 dev went :?: (i.e. I’ve not idea and just guessing).

You could try Ubuntu Mate from https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/

I was not aware that Debian have released a fully functional Operating System for the RPi 3B:

Gnome is resource hungry and will be slow, where is proof that Debian with Gnome is available, rather than rumour ?

I have seen YT videos and images showing the Pi running with GNOME 3 quite smoothly, but unfortunately, I can't find them at the moment. Maybe the version used in Debian is a modified version which is less resource hungry?

Maybe they are actually running an old version of Raspbian & Gnome DE ? ?

Do not believe everything posted on the WWW or in videos !!!

Though the Blog states:

""If you want to install a graphical user interface, I would suggest the light-weight LXDE window manager. Gnome is still too massive to run even on a GPU-accelerated Raspberry""

That's strange, it shows a screenshot of the Pi running GLXgears on the GNOME desktop environment and it looks quite smooth to me.
