RPi Zero W (No Headers) with NeoPixel Ring

Mon Jun 04, 2018 12:30 am

Hi, I'm super new to hardware with the Raspberry Pi. I want to know how to connect the Raspberry Pi Zero, again no headers, to my NeoPixel ring (x24). I have a soldering iron, but I need to know what else is needed (types of wires, other hardware, etc.) Also, please try to explain it as simple as possible, and provide diagrams or images if you can.

Thanks in advance,
Jack Richard :)

One solution would be to buy a set of header pins and solder them to your Pi0, then proceed with your favorite tutorial that assumes there are header pins.

What I did with some WS281x LED strips (the same as NeoPixels) was to go to my local hardware store and buy a length of the smallest 3-core mains cable they had (I needed about 3m) and solder that to the end of the strips and to pins 2, 6, and 12 of my Pi Zero. It's been running happily for nearly two years now.

The Zero is hooked up to my doorbell button. When someone rings the doorbell the Pi lights the strip over the door in white (except at halloween when it is green, or christmas when it alternates between red and green). It also send out a signal across my local network which is received by another Pi which makes a sound to let us know someone is at the door. (It usually plays the sound of a TARDIS landing, but can vary)/
