Opensuse 64bit and rpi2/3?

Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:13 am

Hi,

did anyone try the newer Opensuse 64bit version for the Rpi2 or 3? How does it run compared to Raspbian or other Linux? Is there a speed jump fully using the armv8 features/registers?
Thank

No but I have pi64 running here: https://github.com/bamarni/pi64

I have not done any benchmarking but generally it just feels like using the Pi 3 we know and love.

I compiled the official 4.14 kernel with Debian's ARM gcc yesterday. I hesitated if I should go the normal 32bit kernel or the 64bit kernel.

I remember that when I did that before, the syslog would fill up with "application calling obsolete instruction, so trying emulating that". And the system would be frozen after some while.

Guess I should try the current 64bit kernel.

I imagine that the Opensuse version being an official (?) one should be stable or not? The only reason I didn't try is for the size of the os to download and I'd need another fast memory card for it.

I tried 64bit kernel on Raspbian. So a userland in 32bit might call "obsolute" instruction.

I think SUSE have a 64bit userland?

Someone said the GPU is in 32bit mode so currently don't work well with a 64bit kernel. Not sure about.

Rumour won't help after all. So I'll try a 64bit kernel myself.

OK, I'm on a 64bit official kernel with Raspbian now.

Uptime is 10min and no obsolete instruction warning in syslog.

~$ uname -a
Linux pi1 4.14.18-v8+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 15 22:40:27 CST 2018 aarch64 GNU/Linux
~$ w
