Facing problem with KERNEL BUILDING

Hello friends

i am facing problem with KERNEL BUILDING,
i am following steps given @https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... uilding.md

everything worked fine till
install the modules:
sudo make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- INSTALL_MOD_PATH=mnt/ext4 modules_install


but after that following errors i am facing........
Command:
sudo cp mnt/fat32/$KERNEL.img mnt/fat32/$KERNEL-backup.img
Error:
cp: cannot stat 'mnt/fat32/.img': No such file or directory

Command:
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/dts/overlays/*.dtb* mnt/fat32/overlays/
Error:
cp: target 'mnt/fat32/overlays/' is not a directory

Command:
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/dts/overlays/README mnt/fat32/overlays/
Error:
cp: cannot create regular file 'mnt/fat32/overlays/': Not a directory

i am not able to boot the PI
how to solve this problem

You appear not to have set the KERNEL environment variable.
