Cases for the Raspberry Pi

I am sure there are a number of "Liquids" that will work. ukscone hasn't decide about the challenge yet? lol. I might have to do it. Do not know what use it will be as cooling will not be an issue, but what about a RasPi lava lamp?

if the R-Pi had lots of blinky leds on it i'd definatly do it. i'm not sure what you'd use to seal round the connectors. some sort of silicon based calk?

would the R-Pi get hot enough to drive the lava in a lava lamp?

Nope - it runs very cool, so you'd probably have to use an additional lightbulb!

for the cooling isse you can also use destilled water.. if the pcb is clean you will not get a shortcircuit.

That is such a cool idea. Unfortunately, the CPU runs cool, so it would be a no-go. You could use a peltier electric heat exchanger or something similar but I suspect you would then have the problem that the volume of liquid is too small for the temperature delta to activate the lava lamp oil correctly.

A better solution would be to try and source a very sensitive temperature sensitive liquid.

If they wanted to just sell the first best thing then you would now have a untested alpha board. Have some trust and respect, they deserve it.

I don't think any of us have taken any offence - don't worry!

The low temperature the chip runs at is part of our mobile phone dividend - it's brilliant, but it was really a side benefit. And it means you can build swanky metal cases without having to worry about anything melting. I'm trying to work out how I can show you guys how cool it runs in a video - if we thrash the 3d-ness and park a finger on said chip without screaming, will that do?

you could put a bit of ice cream on a bit of aluminium foil although that would be a waste of ice cream. what about a cadbury flake on a piece of aluminium foil? er no that would be a waste of a cadbury flake. er ok what about er nah sod it use the finger

you could go all high tech and use a laser temperature sensor! you should be able to porrow one someplace for a few minutes, but chocolates good.

Back on topic...this may be a good use for a used cigarette pack. Just cut holes where you need 'em!

An Altoids box: a credit card just about fits in one. A power supply and LiPo battery should fit in the lid. The box should also make a great heat shield (probably needed for the PSU and the battery. We are told the Raspi runs real cool.)

For the Model B of the Raspi, you will need to carve the lid a bit to be able to use the RJ45 jack and the top USB port.

I think a Raspi inside an Altoids box will be truly "curiously strong". It will be "curiouser-ly stronger" inside a Cinnamon flavor box, if you can find one: http://bit.ly/oLhDhi

you must have blooming big matches where you are.

i just picked up a 12 pack of altoids at the local box store so i'll have plenty of tins pity the circuit board isn't circular (still think they missed a visual pun by it not being circular but that's by the by) as i have 2 really really nice circular tins (that contained espresso pillows -- coffee toffee wrapped in chocolate) with little perspex portholes in the top that would look really cool

The cardboard, not to forget the striking surface, will be a fire hazard even with the matches out.

There will probably not be enough heat to be a fire hazard. Sparks could be possible but unlikely. If it worries you, coat the inside with tin foil glued in. A match box server has been done before, so it will work with enough research. Computers have been assembled into wood enclosures also. I would leave the matches in though. Might need to start the BBQ later.

Assuming the ~22mm height is for Model B ("stacked USB"), we really do need to carve up the Altoids' lid a bit, hopefully only on the edges. ( I have just verified that a standard Altoids box is 20mm high with lid closed.)

If no cans get in the way, a Model A might still fit inside an Altoids box.
