Isn't it useless?
If you have computer that runs android studio, it certainly can use its built-in emulator with more power than pi which struggles with bare androidthings doing nothing.
Can you come up with anything that this actually does that e.g. Raspbian cannot? (plus raspbian is way more lightweight an can be actually used itself instead of just being an 'iot' device)

I'm guessing it basically allows people who are used to developing apps for cel phones to now develop apps and put them on a raspberry pi - which will equal more conmwctivity to the real world (home or whatever automation).

There are one billion more people that know how to make apps with android studios than know how to write with c or python even... I think it will allow some app programmers to start developing physical products. Just my guessing about a subject I know nothing about. (Been meaning to learn how to develop apps forever)

to answer both of the post above and playing a bit of devil's advocate:

Its about the Eco System, the way i see iot devices being implemented in the future is that an individual's preference of which app "ecosystem" they prefer. will it be google, apple or windows. these three are the major players right now. Suppose you are a non-tech layman and someone provides you with three choices, Apple (you have heard about it and possibly use it), Google Android (you have heard about it and possibly use it) and Raspbian (What the heck is that?).

Secondary app, development ecosystem, Apple (you have heard about it and possibly your developers already work on it), Google Android (you have heard about it and possibly your developers already work on it) and Raspbian (you need to train people to use it)

So, for OSes by such big companies, we need to think from a "non-maker" perspective. I do reckon that you and I can make really great IoT projects using this, because we have an inclination toward doing a lot of things manually.

But believe me, hundreds of thousands of android app developers who have been working in a cubical creating apps for MNCs, they can't do it using raspbian, but suddenly we have a form of android running on this and now they can because for them it's just a matter of adding a few extra lines of code.

Raspbian has neither an streamlined toolchain nor a deployment solution nor tools for software
lifecycle managment. Actually , that is wrong. There is too much choice and ironically , that is what
people find unattractive.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

Useless or not useless depends on what you intend to do with it. The lite version of Jessie won't do what the full version will do but may be all you need for the job at hand. The same could be said for Windows 10 IoT versus Windows 10. Android of Things versus Android. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.
I have no Interest in the whole IoT stuff, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what can be done and what people do with it. It's just not my cup of tea.

UPDATE:

I've tried some more of the provided samples and a few more things are clearer

1) rca or hdmi, your choice, both work. Unsure about official touch screen as i do not own one.
2) GUI is a thing, normal android app elements can be added to the screen and interacted with using a mouse (possibly touch, but couldn't test it)
3) If multiple apps are running they are aware wat gpios are being used by the other app and hence exceptions can be handled accordingly.
4)Camera is supported.

That's good news. I wasn't sure Android Things could run multiple apps. As it seems it can, can those be brought to the foreground and have their own screen and UI interactions ? If so it should be possible to fake a full-desktop environment. After all, that's simply what a Launcher app does.

It's been a while since I developed for Android so it feels like I've forgotten more than I can remember. On the plus side it means Android Studio is no longer quite so alien compared to Eclipse and I am quite liking it. That runs on Windows 7 so no need for a Windows 10 PC as is the case for Windows 10 IoT. It seems it might run on XP with a bit of coaxing.

Keep going with the updates; they are very useful.

You, uh... you really think that more than one out of every seven men, women, and children on this entire planet know how to make apps with android studios?

the app that are supposed to be in the foreground are all "launcher" apps, are are no other type of UI apps, sure you can have multiple apps running.

this is how i got it working:
both the blink and simpleui apps were in fact, both launcher apps. I simply installed the simplui app over it and the blink app continued to work in the background

What camera app did you try, with what camera? I'm encountering camera problems.

Thanks
