Linux Groups Not Working?

Thu Nov 20, 2014 1:30 am

I am not sure where to post this I am no beginner entirely, I admin a great deal many things and I thought I understood users, permissions and groups and folder structures.

My setup is a B+ running berryboot with multiple images the latest I believe wheezy by default.

I am setting up a SFTP with multiple users and different permission levels.

So I create a group lets call it SFTPUSERS

I create my various users lets call them, USER1, USER2 and so on

I add all these users to the SFTPUSERS group

I go to the USB mounted external HD via /media/usb0/mydrive and show a ls -l

I sudo chown to pi:SFTPUSERS and I give it a -R to set all files in the structure to have the same permissions

I can go into any of the folders in this structure and it will show pi:SFTPUSERS as the owner with rwxwrxwrx as the privileges

I remotely hit it with any of the users logins and they can not copy into the file structure anywhere, they can read but that is all.

I am running usbmount with auto mounting hence the location but I don't think that should be an issue.

The External USB HD is a ext4 format.

I need some help or advice its got to be something I am missing or don't understand, thanks in advance.
