Screen recording program/utility?

Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:05 pm

I've tried Googling this extensively and have been unable to find a simple solution (including searching the forums, so apologies if this has already been asked somewhere - I couldn't find it). I'd like to do video capture of the Raspbian desktop for making tutorials, like some of the popular Pi YouTube channels do. For example, as shown in these videos:

I'm aware of "scrot" to take screenshots, and I know there are plenty of Windows programs that do this (e.g. CamStudio), but I can't seem to find anything for the Pi. I'm also pretty surprised at the quality of the screen recording - I figured the Pi would have a stuttery framerate, but it looks quite smooth. Anyone have a good suggestion?

apt-get update
apt-get recordmydesktop
apt-get gtk-recordmydesktop

Thanks, but I'm not sure if the Pi has enough horsepower to run this effectively. I tried it and the GUI stopped responding when I tried to select the recording area. I used the command-line utility instead and then it took over an hour to encode a 41-second video with default settings. The whole video also had a pinkish hue to it which is rather bizarre, but that might have something to do with the color scheme (which you can change in the advanced settings).

Thanks for the suggestion though! I'm still better off than I was, even if this isn't ideal.

Don't they just send the Raspberry's display to a fast machine and do the screen recording there?

No idea, that's what I'm trying to find out. If that is what they do, I'm not 100% clear on how to do it. Maybe I want to do this?

But I'm not totally clear if that makes the RPi's desktop a windowed application within a normal Windows desktop (in which case I could just use Camstudio as normal to record), or if the RPi takes over the screen completely.
