Backup of SD Card

Tue Nov 05, 2013 10:05 pm

I have just un packed my new raspberry pi bundle with Noobs 8gb distribution sd card. I have connected everything up correctly inserted the sd card and powered up. It then asks me which distro I want to install. I selected raspbian as recomended. It then gives me a warning that the sd card will be over written. Do I need to backup the sd card before proceeding? How can this be done? Can I copy the contents of the card to cd/dvd/hard disk using Windows XP?

Thank you for any assistance.

Darryl

Lifehacker has an excellent guide. I used it successfully myself.

Windows XP reports the distro SD card as being 2gb and not 8gb as stated on the card. Would the card have to be reformated?

Thanks

get your 2GB copied. Your installation may contain an option to 'inflate the filesystem' to fill up the 8GB card, and if you have not got to that stage yet then a smaller content is likely. It is so that the installer is unchanged for 4,8,16GB cards.
