Newboy needs help - not playing .MKV

Wed Aug 28, 2013 7:08 am

Very new to pi so please be kind! Trying to make my pi into a home theatre pc by using XBMC. Runs music fine, runs some old random movies fine but I converted 4 DVDs with makemkv to .mkv format and it doesn't work. These movies work on laptop, pi sees movies in file list, pi thinks it is playing (timer runs) but there is just a small static picture. Seems like files are ok, pi recognises file and has codec (it puts up a small static picture). Is the file too big (5Gb+), is the data rate too high for pi for GPU - any ideas what to try next??

Thanks, Phil

You might need to buy the MPEG2 license.
Are the files using the MPEG2 codec ?

Use MediaInfo to get codec information.
Filename extensions are smoke and mirrors.

Think of a .mkv as the video equivalent of a ZIP file - It can contain the video information in a wide variety of formats. The mediainfo program is one that can tell you about the format of the contained video file.

Having said that it seems unlikely that it would be mpeg2 as was mentioned earlier. mpeg2 is more traditionally associated with dvd's and some cameras. The norm for .mkv files is h264 and the Pi should be able to play these OK as that codec is built into the standard firmware.

He says that he has converted some DVD's with MakeMKV and MakeMKV does exactly that, it remuxes the DVD Mpeg2 video into a MKV container format.

So YES you need the mpeg2-license for your Pi to be able to play DVD's or DVD's ripped with MakeMKV.

Seems a bit pointless then? Why not leave them as mpeg2 files?

Mostly this forum ... i guess the sticky threads are worth
a read (i.e. the links posted in them).

You only need to buy a license key at
http://www.raspberrypi.com - instructions can be found
there , further instructions will be sent by mail (along with
the key itself) .

Have got the license key but have no idea what it is talking about - can anybody help??

The instructions are : -

Thank you for purchasing codec license keys from the Raspberry Pi Store. To enable codecs on your device(s), add the following lines to the config.txt file in the FAT partition of your SD card:

decode_MPG2=**********

If you want to verify that the codecs are now enabled, the following commands will report their status:

vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2
vcgencmd codec_enabled WVC1

Thanks, Phil

Are you running Raspbmc or Openelec or another version of XBMC on your Pi ?

Go through the settings menu in XBMC and see if it contains an option for you to enter your license key directly.

or...

If you put your SD-card into a windows machine you will find that Windows can see one partition and among the files there yo will find "config.txt". Add your license to this file as described in the mail.

All recoding reduces imagequality. If you have the diskspace (which is cheap) it makes sense to keep the original videotrack, and at much reduced rip-times.
