SD Image File

Mon Mar 18, 2013 7:37 pm

I am new to Raspberry and have very little programming skill. I just loaded the 2013-02-09 image file on a FAT32 formatted SD card. Two of the files in the image on the card are zip files named kernel.img and kernel_emergency. Should these two zip files be unzipped on the card? My windows version of WinZip says it can only unzip files in ISO format. What should I do?

First off, welcome to the forums :-)

Secondly the .img file isn't a zip file and doesn't need to be "unzipped" onto the SD card

Just to make sure, how did you write the 2013-02-09 image file onto your SD card?

no. That is, if you've loaded the image properly, say with the win32diskimager for example, whatever files you can see with your windows computer you don't need to do anything. Stick the sd card in the pi and switch on. Should boot up, and you're ready to go.

Um... he's already successfully written the image to the card (hence he can see the two files he mentioned), a post telling him to look at how to image his card is slightly unneeded ;-)

Thanks to all who replied to my post. I followed the information on the Raspberry Pi web page for getting started by downloading and unzipping the downloaded file on my Vista machine. After formatting a SanDisk 8MB SD card in FAT32, I used Win32diskimager v0.7 to create the image. I did stumble around a bit (search the web) to get a program to verify the checksum and a procedure to format the SD. Now I will order the board and a power supply here in the US.

Oh cloud, insulting a mod is never a bright idea. Especially when you keep giving such unhelpful and often downright patronizing posts.
