I have an 8GB SD Card, but only getting 4GB

Wed Jan 16, 2013 12:23 pm

I have been playing around with my raspberry pi for a few days now, but I kept running into an issue when trying to install lamp. After noticing that it was saying it was out of disk space, I did df -h and got:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs 1.8G 1.5G 215M 88% /
/dev/root 1.8G 1.5G 215M 88% /
devtmpfs 220M 0 220M 0% /dev
tmpfs 44M 204K 44M 1% /run
tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 88M 0 88M 0% /run/shm
/dev/mmcblk0p1 56M 17M 40M 30% /boot

Which adds up to exactly 4,029,780 bytes. Can anyone tell me where the remaining space is, or how to extend the volumes?

Sorry, kind of a bit new to Linux...

I haven't looked closely but I think you've double counted. You are probably only seeing the 2GB partition initially used by Linux.

Which distribution are you using?

If you're using Rapbian, just run raspi-config and choose the option to use the entire SD card. See http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruits-ras ... n/overview for example.

I'm running raspian, but I'm not using the visual interface. I'm directly connecting it to the network, then ssh-ing in. I don't have it in front of me atm, but how can I call raspi-config over ssh, or do I have to do something complicated?

Your count is off because rootfs and /dev/root are actually the same thing. Not sure why it is listed that way because the main (/) filesystem is actually the partition /dev/mmcblk0p2. And the tmpfs devices are all in RAM. So your real total is the size of the original image 1850 MB.

Once you use raspi-config to expand your file system to fill 8 GB SD you would see something more like this for "Size" (but "Used", "Avail", and "Use%" would vary, this one had a bunch of things added):

Code: Select all

efflandt@rpi8 ~ $ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs 7.3G 5.4G 1.5G 79% /
/dev/root 7.3G 5.4G 1.5G 79% /
devtmpfs 180M 0 180M 0% /dev
tmpfs 38M 612K 37M 2% /run
tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 75M 136K 75M 1% /run/shm
/dev/mmcblk0p1 56M 17M 39M 31% /boot
Note: To keep formatted things in columns when posting, highlight it and click

Code: Select all

I saw the same thing and thought the same. And, after expanding to the whole SD, I still see it double. I wonder if it is the way that a Mac sets up the partition table. Just a thought.
