Not able to share files to a portable drive on my Raspberry Pi.

Mon Sep 09, 2019 12:21 pm

I am not able to transfer files from my windows machine to a portable drive connected to my Raspberry Pi on the network through Samba. I am however able to view and read them.

The drive is mounted to /disks/ and has following permissions:

Code: Select all

drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 131072 Jan 1 1970 DRIVENAME
Anyone know what's up?

See what "mount" reports, also look at the content of the directory ?

What is the command for that?

Oh! Here is the mount.

Code: Select all

/dev/sda3 on /disks/DRIVENAME type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096)
Inside the drive, everything is pretty much listed as "root" except:

Code: Select all

drwxr-xr-x 4 pi pi 4096 Sep 8 19:09 ..

Update:

Apparently it's not a matter of permissions, as I am able to transfer small files.

Only big files give me an issue. I've done some digging, and it seems to be how Debian handles ExFAT drives and allocation.

The drive is ExFAT so I can use it on a Windows device also, but do any of you know a solution to this problem?

Reformat it as NTFS and install ntfs3g on the Pi. It won't be fast, but it will work.

Is there any way to make ExFAT work with transferring large files cross-platform?

exFat should not have an issue with files larger the 4Gb, Fat32 yes but not exFat.

FAT32 tops out with files at 4 GB in size and hard drives that are 8 TB or less.

ExFat is silly with 16EB files and 128PB volumes

The only box I’ve played with ExFat on (Debian) needed

Code: Select all

sudo apt install exfat-utils exfat-fuse
to run - unsure about a Pi...
Need Pi spray - these things are breeding in my house...

Running both. Still having an issue. Gotta wonder what is causing the issue...
