What HDMI to VGA converters are highly guaranteed to work with very old monitors?
If the converter works with your laptop there should be no reason it wouldn't work with your PI. It doesn't seem to me to be a converter issue.
I would imagine the Pi isn't configured the same as the laptop. The first thing to do would be to determine what mode the HDMI of the Pi is in ( I believe it's "tvservice" which will help there ), and, if you can, determine what mode the laptop's HDMI is using.
You can work your way through the various HDMI settings to see which works. The monitor will probably accept 640x480 or 800x600 so start with those to limit the options you need to try before something works.
The other possibility is that the converter isn't getting enough power from the Pi when it can from the laptop. Adding an external supply for the converter may help.
