Opportunities for network performance acceleration or enhancement in internet connection

Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:24 am

My vague and confused question is about the feasibility of setting up a remote (hosted) pi to somehow boost the throughput or responsiveness of my slow DSL internet connection.

My question: Are there networking performance boosting opportunities that can be obtained by using a small server on such as a pi to benefit all the boxes on the network ?

http: I wonder if compression of http or other types of protocols might make sense. (Un)fortunately many http servers already do gzip, but not enough. (Is widespread https making this impossible now?)

DNS: I already have a local DNS proxy cache / relay in my router so acceleration of DNS lookups is already being handled.

Get a Raspberry Pi 3B+ that will give you more network bandwidth than any of your mucking about, but it won't help.

Your connection to the public ISP has a fixed bandwidth (you'll see that https://speedtest.net give mostly consistent results). There's nothing you can do at your remote station to get over that. Caching DNS and caching http/https stuff in a proxy on your Raspberry doesn't add much.

Windows systems already cache DNS, web browsers already cache pages so they don't have to fetch the same static content time and time again. HTTPS doesn't negate GZIP, the zipped web stuff is sent over the https channel.

So, what you're proposing is, mostly, a waste of time and effort.

Running pihole (or something similar) which stops ads on web pages being downloaded can yield an apparent speed increase. But it won't bring any speed boost to file downloads or media streaming.
