Increase the wifi range

Wed Dec 27, 2017 6:40 pm

Hi,
I`m a beginner use a Raspberry pi 3. I want to Increase the wifi range. If I use this https://www.ebay.it/itm/Antenna-Nano-Mi ... Swo4pYHD8F will this improve my wifi range? Or maybe it's better to use a different way?

I would go with a higher gain antenna, like this unit.

The tiny antenna on the 3B is pretty feeble but was never intended to be used at longer distances. It is a real convenience if your 3B is near to the Access Point. The mini-wifi dongles as you cited, are marginally better but for a USB dongle on a 3B, it is hard to beat the dongles with a full size antenna such as the Panda PAU06. Not much more money than the little guys but size really does matter when it comes to antennas. It is all about capture area.

So the antenna that the colleague recommended would be a better choice?

Yes, but you will need to connect it to the Pi's WiFi. Other options would include getting a WiFi Extender or a USB WiFi dongle that has a jack for attaching an external antenna and a compatible antenna.

The linked item is a USB WiFi dongle with external antenna.

Attaching an external antenna to the Pi's onboard WiFi will invalidate the regulatory approval in most places.

That is why I also provided additional options.

Longer range antennas suck as well as blow...if your neighbor can hear you interfering with his system, you can probably hear him as well on yours. So more power and bigger antennas work with limitations but the sword cuts both ways. I live in a rural area and my nearest neighbor is over 600' away. A visitor comes once in a while with a high powered outdoor system that I can scan but not receive well. I normally run on 2.4G ch 1 so it is not a big deal for me but the full-size dipole antenna I scabbed on my RPi 3 does keep my wifi speeds up on the downstairs router. Out in the sticks, "Uncle Charlie" is unlikely to be a problem. Ham-fisted soldering on an RPi board is the biggest issue. For optimum security, speed and reliability, very little beats ethernet.

i have done this easy hack a few times

the link is to my own webpage

http://webx.dk/oz2cpu/raspberry_player/ ... _range.htm

it really helps the RP3 range, to 2-3 rooms down the hall, as any thing normal wifi stuff.
But if your geek room is the same as where your router is located, you dont need this hack.

Wow - that looks quite a simple mod

Obviously completely invalidates the Pi3 WiFi certification and prob not going to be worht $$$ over just getting a dongle with an external antenna but very interesting :)

one should always choose the method that suits need and skils,
I wanted to keep all usb ports free, and no trouble with drivers and settings,
and since soldering stuff like this is super easy for me, that is the way I go.

Just don't be surprised when the Men in Black come knocking on your door. Especially now they know who you are.
