Longer range antennas suck as well as blow...if your neighbor can hear you interfering with his system, you can probably hear him as well on yours. So more power and bigger antennas work with limitations but the sword cuts both ways. I live in a rural area and my nearest neighbor is over 600' away. A visitor comes once in a while with a high powered outdoor system that I can scan but not receive well. I normally run on 2.4G ch 1 so it is not a big deal for me but the full-size dipole antenna I scabbed on my RPi 3 does keep my wifi speeds up on the downstairs router. Out in the sticks, "Uncle Charlie" is unlikely to be a problem. Ham-fisted soldering on an RPi board is the biggest issue. For optimum security, speed and reliability, very little beats ethernet.
