Begginer and I am lost. Pi as document storage server, not seen by windows.

I was trying to use my Pi3 as a print and document storage server and I can't even get it to be seen by Windows 10 or 8.1 on my network. I can't even show you my smb.conf without trying to type out the whole thing.

I have followed instructions and nothing works. I did get it to sort of work one time with a lite version of Samba? Could see the printer in Cups and on the network even set it up. Was never able to print to it, and never saw it on the network again.

This is very frustrating. So many different ways and types of Pi's are getting to me. I am about to give up. If anyone can walk me through this I would be greatful.

Anyone please just give me a place to start that's in English and directed at my Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspbian. I am trying to set it up as a print server and at this point I am lost.

Well I got it up and running again. At least I can now see the Pi, on my network. If someone could point me to a good tutorial to set up a print server I would be appreciative.

You're using CUPS as the end interface for your printer right ?

There are tons tutorial setting up Samba/CUPS on raspbian system out there. Will try to post some if I have enough time to browse my past history on it.

That's the problem, there are so many. It is confusing because many of them are just slightly different. This is why I am asking those who have been doing this for a bit. They may know which tutorial is right for my completely updated and upgraded Pi 3.

I followed these instructions to the letter.

https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-print-server/

I installed the latest version of Cups and have the latest version of Samba. These are the only changes I made to the Samba conf:

[printers]
comment = All Printers
browseable = no
path = /var/spool/samba
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = yes
create mask = 0700

# Windows clients look for this share name as a source of downloadable
# printer drivers
[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /var/lib/samba/printers
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = no

After doing this initially I saw the printer and installed it in Cups from my Chrome browser. However for some reason even though windows saw it and installed it, I could not print to it from the windows machine. I could print from the Pi directly, and still can.

So I removed the printer from Windows 10 only, and then rebooted both computers.I made sure Samba is running and the Pi is no longer seen on the windows machine????

I am at a loss. All I did was remove the printer from Windows?

PS: I forgot to mention that yes "wins" and "workgroup" are both set up correctly and enabled in the smb.conf.
