Help: Best alternative to default Raspbian Stretch Repositories and how to change it

Wed Oct 25, 2017 5:40 am

I have been unable to even use sudo apt-get upgrade without having few connection fails which altogether breaks the package installation. I have checked my internet and it has no problem, I am able to ping mirrordirector.raspbian.org without any packet loss. Tried changing the nameserver to 8.8.8.8 on both the router and the RPi3 (/etc/resolv.conf) but still every installation of package via 'sudo apt-get install' has 5-6 connection fails out of 50-60 'Get. This is the link to that issue I have posted on forum here and on stackexchange - https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... g-packages.

So, is there any reliable alternative to the default repositories of Raspbian Stretch? If there are, how do I change the repositories correctly? Last time I tried, I had to reinstall the entire Raspbian Stretch again (I am a noob with linux) because it said something like Release file was missing.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

you should do

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgarde

(or)
sudo apt-get dist-upgarde

if it fails wait 30min and try again! until ok.
i have bad internet times here too, but i see no reason to change anything on the OS!
not very sure about this but i just recommend not to try any installs... while above steps not finished successfully

I have trying this for over a week, and yesterday I changed repository to that of Raspbian Jessie and the sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade worked without any problem. The packages are simply not getting downloaded without at least 1 or 2 connection fails in most cases for Raspbian Stretch.

Any leads?

Which repo are you seeing the issues on? raspberrypi.org, raspbian.org or both?

hm, i can not see that updates on STRETCH would have MORE internet connection problems ( from here )
but if you had a JESSIE system and upgarded to STRETCH you should not try to switch back????

pls download and burn a new setup https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_latest
and do update on that.

I am currently doing sudo apt-get upgrade and archive.raspberrypi.org is getting some connection fails (so far 2 connections failed out of 73) and yesterday it was mirrordirector.raspbian.org that had connection fails (not too many but few like 5 or 6 out of 70) but anyway it breaks the installation.

I have the latest Raspbian Stretch (from the downloads section of raspberrypi.org). I never had Jessie installed as I bought my RPi3 after the release of Raspbian Stretch.

Are you able to ping and traceroute the IP it resolves?

This is the log of my last sudo apt-get upgrade and similar connection fails are happening on almost every package installation (and not just random, for example, the chromium-mod package has failed every single time I have run sudo apt-get upgrade on 3 different fresh installs of Raspbian Stretch.

again the same packages are failing and when I manually try to, they get stuck at Waiting for header [90%] and then returns connection failed. I can't figure out if its the repository or me!

I seriously suspect it is the repository. Is there a repository that has most packages (Open CV, Dlib, GTK, etc) which can be used instead of the default repositories? If so, please also give me a brief explanation on what to do with the sources.list and raspi.list so that I don't get any trouble in the near-future! :)

I don't think there is anything wrong with the repository. I think there is something wrong between your ISP and the server, but let's wait until we hear back from the hosting provider.

Well, I think I mentioned before somewhere here but maybe bringing it up can help!? I experimented with the sources.list and raspi.list files and changed it as per some old post when Raspbian Jessie was released, they mixed up Jessie and Wheezy repository (i skipped the preference part). And well, with that, I ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which worked without any problem of connection fails. But in the end, it was all trouble because I had updated and upgraded with a mix of packages stretching over 3 different Debian versions so I had to do another fresh install of Raspbian Stretch.

And btw, I am running on a clock! Have to finish this project in two days maximum. I have the program ready but installing packages are giving me headache since 2 weeks!

besides the connection problems,
you wrote:fresh install of Raspbian Stretch

for some time / JESSIE / STRETCH / all use the pre installed realVNC server
( need enable by 'sudo raspi-config' and install realVNC client on PC )

Well, I used an internet manual for headless install and I know realVNC is there but to use it via desktop client, I have to register/signup etc so that made it a bit tedious. So, I have been using TightVNC which seemed to be more convenient to me.

I don't remember which post was it but it's on the raspberrypi.org/forums and was posted in 2013 or something. All it did was include Wheezy repository along with Jessie since that time people had some trouble with the newly released Jessie's repo.

And I am trying to Install OpenCV and Dlib for image processing - face recognition.

I'm confused now.

You say stretch, and started with stretch.
What has Jessie and weezie it to do with it.

Anyway, given the time constraint, download the latest image on a new SD card and start again. If problems persist, then it is routing problems or ISP problems.

I'm confused now.

You say stretch, and started with stretch.
What has Jessie and weezie it to do with it.

Anyway, given the time constraint, download the latest image on a new SD card and start again. If problems persist, then it is routing problems or ISP problems.
I just added the repositories of Jessie and Wheezy into the sources.list and raspi.list files as an experiment and it worked (no connection fails). But, it altogether broke the Debian I guess so, I did again a fresh install of Raspbian Stretch and left the repositories as it is. And I have the latest image installed (which is Raspbian Stretch ).
Why is it an issue with ISP or routing since every time on every fresh install of Raspbian Stretch I have done in the past 3 days, the same packages are getting connection fails such as the rpi-chromium-mods while the rest are downloaded without issue. There is no packet loss to the server either.

so again, if you use a new burned STRETCH
for headless work enable SSH and VNC ( by sudo raspi-config OR by the file trick )

and ONLY do the
sudo apt-get update successfully

you can try to install the tools you need for your programming

I notice on a list in there.

Do
- sudo apt-get clean
- sudo apt update
- sudo apt-get install apt apt-transport-https apt-utils

This should update just apt
(apt-get is an extension of it as far as I know, apt just displays a bit prettier)

Then
- sudo apt update
- sudo apt upgrade

First turn back everything you altered to default though.
Edit, I see, ah so lesson.. ignore anything related to older releases. ;-)

It could be a routing issue as the connection is failing, be it the route, timeout, whatever.
RPi are doing whatever they are doing their end to check

I don't know if you can specify a particular mirror server. But. It's not just one and most can connect.

For me it's the damn IPv6 servers that make mine fail, and apt is not clever enough to roll over to another server on the mirror.

Installing package from the repo is my only problem. TightVNC was downloaded without issue (but other packages were not) and was using for over a month till 4-5 days ago when I experimented too much and I thought I needed a fresh install or everything will be a disaster.

Okay I will try that. But I haven't altered anything. I am working on a fresh install of Raspbian Stretch. Did a headless install, enabled SSH and configured my WIFI (wpa_supplicant.conf) and nothing else other than attempting to download the packages of which I have provided the log above.

I noticed that :-)
Just check the edited post.
This is just to update apt, the program that does the update buisiness.
(I don't know if apt would update the other two apt bits so I added them to the line)

Worth a try anyway
