Mac File Sharing

Sat Jan 30, 2016 8:47 pm

Hello.

I am running the Pi B with Jessie Raspbian installed; I am trying to make a network connection from my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5 to the Pi so I can do file sharing.

The Pi is on a reserved/static IP address over Ethernet directly to the router.

I installed TightVNC https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ras ... le-sharing per Adafruit instructions and screensharing is working fine.

Now I want to enable File sharing so I can easily move files back and forth.

I tried following the instructions at http://4dc5.com/2012/06/12/setting-up-v ... ac-access/ but though everything *looks* correct when I actually go to the "shared" section of the Finder on the mac, I get "connection failed" showing on the info bar of the shared RaspberryPi.

If I actually go to "connect as..." I get the following error message:

"There was a problem connecting to the server "raspberrypi". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."

I also tried installing netatalk instead. SSHing into the pi from the Mac and doing

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install netatalk
got me:

[...]
Fetched 1,640 kB in 22s (71.6 kB/s)
E: Failed to fetch http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/rasp ... _armhf.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 2001:41c9:1:3ce::11 80]

E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

I do not want to run apt-get update because that will blow away the config files for my PiTFT monitor which I just got working this past week (I did do an apt-get update before I installed the PiTFT, FWIW).

What command do I run with --fix-missing?
Should I just download netatalk from github and try installing it that way?
Is that actually going to fix my networking problem or is there some kind of conflict between VNC and the Mac shared files?

Thanks for any/all help.

I just now tried smb using the following instructions:

But no dice, the Mac is still giving the same error as before when I try to connect to it in finder.

Suggestions?

Since OSX is just a hacked up version of BSD wouldn't it be better to look at NFS rather than SMB?

SMB works, but I use netatalk.

Do you have any suggestions for making netatalk or SMB work? If you look in my original post you can see I tried to download netatalk and got errors; SMB installed but I am still getting my original error message.

Unfortunately this is what happened when I tried netatalk:

Well, I'm far from an expert, but you could try building from source:

I tried building netatalk from source, and got as far as the config file erroring out telling me I needed something called "Berkeley DB."

I googled this and found out I need both Berkeley DB 4.6+ and something called Libgcrypt.

I found out I can download Libgcrypt at http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Libgcrypt but there is no raspbian version as far as I can tell, and googling Berkeley DB led me to some huge and incomprehensible Oracle site.

I just need some package names... but I am so new I don't know how to find them.

Well, I eventually got around the problem by using FileZilla and just sftping into the pi's address.

Moin,

my setup is as follows:

MacBook Pro OSX El Capitan V10.11.3
FileZilla V3.14.1 - WiFi sftp:/A.B.C.D – pi – raspberry – Port 22

with WiFi to my router, from there ethernet cable to either a Pi B 512MB, or also

Raspberry Pi 2 B V1.1 Quad Core 1GB
NOOBS – raspberrypi 4.1.16-v7+ Linux / jessie

To compare the issue I set up file sharing and auto discovery
[Source: Getting Started With Raspberry Pi]
On the Pi: sudo apt-get install netatalk

Now from the Mac, open Finder, and hit ⌘K

With my server address afp://AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD and general name & pw
this does allow sharing of files or accessing (opening) files on the Mac which are stored on the Pi.

Have a nice day.

yah I tried that but it crashed OS X so I use smb because it's most popular so works everywhere (or ssh/scp/sftp/sshfs )

What works for me right now - Raspbian wheezy Pi's with iMac on yosemite etc - is this bunch of stuff. Obviously, change the IP numbers and the /home/pi/DizietFS stuff to suit your needs.

On the Pi

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install netatalk libnss-mdns xrdp
sudo service rpcbind start
sudo update-rc.d rpcbind enable
mkdir /home/pi/DizietFS
sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.65:/Users/tim /home/pi/DizietFS
edit /etc/fstab to make the directory mount at boot. I added a line to the end of /etc/fstab:

Code: Select all

192.168.1.65:/Users/tim /home/pi/DizietFS nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr,noauto,x-systemd.automount 0 0
On the iMac

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/exports
(which won’t normally exist until you save it)
and add the line

Code: Select all

/Users/tim -mapall=tim -alldirs -network 192.168.1.0 -mask 255.255.255.0
then

Code: Select all

sudo nfsd restart
makes the Pi's file systems appear in the Filer and the Mac's available on the Pi's.
