Screen goes blank when I open a file with nano

Thu Jan 07, 2016 1:59 am

Hey guys, new user here. Just looking to learn, wanted to start by setting up my wifi connection.
I have a Raspberry Pi 2 model b, I've installed raspbian from a microSD that came with NOOBS.
So I'm in the terminal, since I couldn't find any wifi config app anywhere on the desktop.
I type "sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf" and it opens the file in the nano text editor.
My problem is that after about 3 seconds, the screen goes blank and I can't see anything.
One of the very few things that brings something up on my screen is F1, which brings me to the "Main nano help text".
Whats wrong with my pi? Why does the screen always go blank before I can type in the important information.
To get totally stuck for such a silly reason so early on is really frustrating for me :(
Please help
