Grandmother with a RPi2

Hey,

I want to replace my grandmothers (old) Ubuntu laptop with a Pi2.
The laptop is solely used for Skype and Firefox.

As she likes to have new stuff, but is afraid of change, I want to have the interface as similar as possible. And with that I mean; hopefully I can make them identical to the pixel. :-)

But afaik ubuntu does not run on a RPi2.

What is the closest I can get to having something similar as Ubuntu/Unity on a RPi2?

https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi

Though getting Skype to work could be a challenge...

The RPi has ARM CPU whilst the old Laptop had an Intel/AMD CPU..

Maybe an Android Tablet :?:

You can download Ubuntu (Mate) 15.10 for the Pi2 here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

It's Canonical's Ubuntu for the ARM7 plus Raspbian's kernel (I believe) and some Raspbian drivers.
All in all it looks and works like Ubuntu 15.10 with all the same software packages.

Firefox runs well, but there's faster browsers for the Pi. Like Ephi..something.
And I don't think Skype works on ARM Linux.

But aside that, Ubuntu on the Pi2 runs great and you can manually apt-get install Xubuntu/XFCE or other desktops once your Ubuntu Mate runs on the Pi2, exactly like you do with Intel-/AMD-Ubuntu.

[Edit] Fruitoftheloom answered first whilst I typed in my reply... :-)

I am now running Mate and it looks pretty :-)

I forgot completely about Skype not running on ARM. Are there (easy) workarounds? Or is this impossible?

Whoa, that IS nice!

But if skype runs in the webbrowser... and all I need is a webbrowser... I am almost temted to remake this RPi2 into a webbrowser only computer...

Maybe the best way forward is to only have it run Firefox or Chrome...

The only way is to buy a USB Microphone &WebCam and see if it will work, as I am not sure if Chromium or Firefox Browsers in Ubuntu-Mate support...

Tried it, but no...

Code: Select all

Audio and video calls are not supported on your OS.
Too bad...
