Font Size - Display Resolution

I am having a lot of difficulty seeing the very small fonts in applications in Raspbian. I have been able to change the browser with zoom, but other applications that open have very tiny fonts with no apparent way to increase the size. I have adjusted the desktop fonts so that I can see them but this does not carry over to applications or the terminal.

I have tried to change the resolution for the display with Monitor Settings but only one resolution is there to chose from - 1872x1048. This is a Samsung LED monitor. Selecting AUTO does not change anything.

Any help is appreciated by my aging eyes.

Thanks.

To change Xterminal font - Go to pull down menu:
[Edit] --> [Preferences] --> [Style] tab.
Change terminal font size to your liking.

As far as I can tell there is no useful function of the monitor settings dialog in the GUI.

Screen resolutions are changed by editing the config.txt file: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5851

There is also a setting for the default font. I don't have a English version, so I don't know for sure how it is called - maybe "appearance" or "look and feel"? You'll find it in the menu under settings (or configuration or something similar).

If you want to change the resolution of the display, I would change the "framebuffer_width" and "framebuffer_height" settings in /boot/config.txt. I divided the native horizontal and vertical resolution of the display with 2 and put those values in. Works fine.

With a monitor of less than 24" I have trouble seeing the text at the native 1920x1080, in fact everything is just too small with my old eyes.
Try adjusting the size using the framebuffers. I seem to get a sharper image and smoother text by leaving the monitor at it's native resolution and adjusting the display size using the framebuffers.

In config.txt uncomment the two framebuffer lines and specify several different sizes to see what you like best.

Code: Select all

framebuffer_width=1664
framebuffer_height=936
That size works well for me on a 21" monitor. You may also want to try:
1792x1008
1600x900
1536x864

Note that this will make everything that appears on the screen larger, so if you're increased text size or icon size they may come out too large and you'll need to set them back to "normal" sizes.

Using a different size for framebuffer and real screen size won't work with some programs.

There are font size settings in lxappearance and openbox-config (and more settings like icon size etc.). Use both programs to make everything readable.
